Key Indian Industry Sectors and their Turnover

These are some of the current turnover figures for key Indian industry sectors:

IT and ITES: Rs 1790 billion

Banking: Rs 2300 billion

Processed Foods: Rs 4300 billion

Construction: Rs 460 Billion

Telecom: Rs 850 billion

Automobiles: Rs 1040 billion

Pharmaceuticals: Rs 1125 billion

Top Indian Companies as rated by Standard & Poor:

Rating agency Standard & Poor has identified seven Indian companies that can give their global rivals a run for their money. These include:

  • cement maker ACC (now owned by Swiss giant Holcim AG),

  • Hotel Leela Venture (promoted by Mumbai-based Capt Krishnan Nair),
  • Indian Hotels (the Tata Group company that runs the Taj Group of Hotels),

  • Jain Irrigation (the Jalgaon-based PVC pipes maker);

  • Lakshmi Machine Works (the Coimbatore-based textile machinery maker),

  • Marico (Parachute hair oil, Kaya skin clinics, etc);

  • Siemens India (an arm of the German giant); and Titan Industries (the watches and jewellery company).

BusinessWeek has identified ten Indian companies to watch out for.
