Boom or Bust

Over the last ten seasons, many great players have joined the NBA. From LeBron James to Tim Duncan and Elton Brand to Yao Ming, the league is currently filled with stars that have come from the top of their draft class and have realized all their potential.

However, on the other end of the spectrum, many hopes and dreams have been dashed by a high draft pick that didn't pan out. Whether due to injuries or simply poor play, here are the top ten biggest draft busts of the last ten years.

#10

Jay Williams (Second pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls out of Duke)

Williams was a highly touted point guard who was supposed to go to the Bulls and become their franchise player. He was believed to be the player who could finally erase the ghost of Michael Jordan. Instead, Williams got injured in a motorcycle crash after his rookie season and has never been able to make it back to the NBA.

#9

Dajuan Wagner (Sixth pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers out of Memphis)

Wagner became a basketball legend in high school when he scored 100 points in a game. He had NBA stars going to watch him play before he ever joined the league. However, once he joined the NBA, Wagner was never able to live up to the hype. Over the last couple seasons, he's also battled health problems.

#8

Eddie Griffin (Seventh pick 2001 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets out of Seton Hall)

Coming into the league, Griffin was compared to Tim Duncan. Instead of ever realizing his potential, Griffin has continually gotten into legal trouble. He's currently out of the NBA after being waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

#7

Rafael Araujo (Eighth pick of the 2004 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors out of BYU)

Unlike the first three players on this list, Araujo hasn't been injured or found himself in legal trouble. Instead, Araujo's problem is he just isn't good at basketball. He's currently with the Utah Jazz, but doesn't get playing time unless the game is decided.

#6

Kwame Brown (First pick of the 2001 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards out of Glynn Academy High School)

Brown has actually played better in recent seasons. But considering he was the number one overall pick in the 2001 draft, he hasn't played anywhere near well enough to justify his selection by the Wizards.

#5

Jonathan Bender (Fifth pick 1999 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors out of Picayune High School)

Bender was selected by the Raptors and immediately traded to the Indiana Pacers for Antonio Davis. After a nondescript career, Bender retired at the age 25 due to debilitating chronic knee pain. When healthy, Bender was an exciting yet underachieving player.

#4

Nickoloz Tskitishvili (Fifth pick 2000 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets out of the Republic of Georgia)

Then Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe tried to ride the foreign wave of talent coming into the NBA. Problem was, he picked a player that wasn't good. Tskitishvili played parts of four seasons in the NBA, never averaging more than four points per contest.

#3

Robert Traylor (Sixth pick of the1998 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks out of Michigan)

Traylor was drafted by the Mavericks and traded to the Milwaukee Bucks for Dirk Nowitzki, which has turned into one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history. Traylor never amounted to anything and is now out of the league.

#2

Michael Olowokandi (First pick of the 1998 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers out of Pacific)

Olowokandi finished his 9th season in the NBA and has firmly cemented his spot as one of the worst number one overall selections in modern NBA history. Known around the league as a lazy and aloof player, Olowokandi never became more than a decent center. He's currently on the Boston Celtics, averaging under ten minutes per game.

#1

Darko Milicic (Second pick of the 2003 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons out of Serbia-Montenegro)

Pistons general manager Joe Dumars has proven himself to be great at what he does. However, this is one pick Dumars wishes he could have back. With Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade available, the Pistons opted to roll the dice and go with the little known forward out of Europe. The gamble did not pay off, to say the least.
