A website called Topix has recently been brought to my attention.  A friend of mine had been getting blasted on this “informational website” like you wouldn’t believe.  And then someone informed me that my name had come up on the website…someone had been looking for me, asking for an email address or phone number.

Have any of you been to this website?  Its www.topix.net.  I have never been more ashamed at some of the members of the community of Waterloo before in my life.  I haven’t had the time to scan other zip code forums to see if they are the same, but let me tell you, some of the stuff I have seen on Waterloo’s is downright bitchy.  You can post a discussion about anything you want to their Forum and Polls section.  And ANYONE can comment on your discussion without revealing their identity. 

Have you ever watched the movie Mean Girls?  They have what they call a “burn book” where they write down mean things about everyone in the school.  This website makes that book look like a genius work of poetry.  I have read a discussion that was started by a concerned mom looking for a new pediatrician and ended with the public flogging of a well known man from Columbia.  I have read a discussion about a skateboard park going up in Waterloo and it turns into a bashing of the youths of our town.  I have read numerous discussions about a single mom from Waterloo that gets obscenely bashed there on a daily basis for doing nothing but working to support her child. 

Now I know some of these comments are made by children who are bored and like to get a rise out of someone.  But I also know that most of these comments are made by the adult population of our community.  I look at the adult members of my family…aunts, uncles, grandparents, parents, cousins, sisters, brothers…and I can not imagine any one of them reverting back to their youth just to get the satisfaction of posting a snide comment about someone on an internet website.  Just to purposefully hurt someone.  What does it accomplish?  Why not be adult enough, that if you have a problem with someone, to take it up with them face to face? 

I browsed thru there today and someone had posted a discussion called “topix sucks”.  I could not agree more.  They discussed forwarding some of the threads to a person they know that works for the government, and while I know that nothing will be done because it is a small website and no one has been physically hurt from it, and I know that in all likelihood this person is just trying to scare some gossipers, I really and truly hope that someone steps up and does what it takes to get this website taken down for good.
