The Torres Strait Islands

Whilst the Australian mainland offers travellers a large range of experiences, the scattered islands between Cape York and Papua New Guinea provide a unique blend of cultures and one of Australia’s last frontiers.

The Torres Strait Islands are a collection of small islands reaching from the northern tip of the Australian mainland to within six kilometres of Papua New Guinea, over a distance of 150 kilometres.

Torres Strait Islanders are Melanesians, racially related to the people of Papua New Guinea. Recent research suggests the islands have been occupied for at least 2,500 years.

Two main languages are spoken, whilst the English-based Yumpla Tok (a Creole) serves as a common language between islands. A treaty between Australia and Papua New Guinea allows people to visit the islands, from either country, for cultural purposes.

During WW2, Australian troops were engaged in heavy fighting against the Japanese just to the north, in Papua New Guinea. Over 800 islanders served with the Australian military.

Visiting the Torres Strait Islands

Only two islands can be visited without permission – Waiben (Thursday Island) and Ngurapai (Horn Island). Other islands require permission from the local councils.

Getting there

Horn Island contains the main airport, which receives flights from Cairns and connects to the outer islands. Most international flights can arrive at Brisbane Airport, which has links to Cairns.

Background Information

Where is it on the map?

Click here. This map contains references to the place names mentioned below.

The Europeans

Spanish explorer Luis Vaez de Torres first navigated through the strait in 1606. In 1770, Captain James Cook claimed east coast Australia for the British on Possession Island.

How many islands and how many people?

The question of how many islands can lead to some confusion. Some figures say 138 islands (other estimates vary from 74 to 274) make up the Torres Strait Islands, although only 17 are occupied. For population figures and a more detailed map click here.

Mabo

No article about the Torres Strait Islands would be complete without mentioning Mabo. Koiki (Eddie) Mabo came from Mer (Murray Island). Thanks to his efforts, in 1992 the High Court of Australia found that his people actually owned their land. This effectively overturned the despicable British decision of terra nullius (literally meaning no-man's land), which had repercussions for all of Australia and led to the Commonwealth Native Title Act.

Climate

Two seasons occur. A wet season from December-April/May. Dry season from April/May – December. Current weather and forecasts for Thursay Island. Click here.
