57Australian Tourism facing tough times
We run tours one tour to the Gold Coast 3 days a week a Night Tour each night and an Afternoon Tour 3 days a week, with the down turn in the in the industry we are really struggling as are lot of other companies.
The tourism industry has taken a severe beating in the financial crisis, the number of tourists visiting Australia has dropped .
Queensland Tourism is also feeling the affect of the crisis, with jobs being cut at popular Sunshine Coast tourism hot spots, Underwater World and Australia Zoo, due to low visitor numbers. Almost 500,000 people are employed in the tourism industry. More than half of tourism operators will look to cut staff according to a survey conducted by the Tourism and Transport Forum.
Confidence is low with many businesses losing faith in the international market, the first half of this year was fairly slow for the tourism industry and these conditions will continue well into 2010, and only six percent of the tourism industry believes there will be a recovery this year. Many small businesses have already closed others are undercutting prices severely to try and capture what market there is.
Swine flu affects tourism
Often when there is an issue like this, people don’t stop travelling altogether, they just change their destinations, they change their plans. Australia is a long-haul destination and it could act as a barrier for overseas tourists but it can be the reverse for Australian interstate travellers.
