Toys that aren't plastic or that require batteries
62
There are lots of toys that spark the child's imagination that don't require batteries and are not plastic.
Tinker toys, Alphabet Blocks, wooden trains and the like. For girls you can get cloth dolls and wooden doll houses.
Most toddlers just like a plain old big box they can make into a fort or run through and all kinds of imaginary games.
Colorful sheets makes a very pretty princess and also makes a good fort to hide in.
There are so many things that children can play with that don't include plastic or batteries, except of course their own batteries of ther very active imaginations.
Don't forget the pots and pans and wooden spoons. Who wouldn't want to be a drummer in their later years.
Play hide and seek with them and other games you can make up as you go. Children need the interaction from their parent's and others as well. Invite a few of their friends over have have a party!
Girls just love tea parties and boys like to play astronaut and all children love boxes. The bigger the better. Find someone who has just gotten a washer or something else that comes in a huge box. That is all you need, the children supply the rest.
Go and have fun with your children!
Older children can put together Lincoln Logs (the original wooden ones, not the plastic ones), and Erector Sets. Go out with them at night and watch the night sky. Go on nature walks. The only thing that you need for that is your walking shoes and a great imagination and all those answers to questions such as ....what is that:...... and why?.

Puppets
Simple Hand Puppets that you can make yourself. They can be of paper Lunch Bags. Let the children help you. It is in the making that is fun., Add string, yarns, felt, other paper cutouts, glitter, any scrap material. Use your imagination. Or you can make them like the ones on this side.
You can also make a stage with a large box and you cut out a window. How you decorate it is up to you.
I remember doing this as a child. We would put on a carnival or play for the neighborhood kids to raise money for UNICEF. It was the older kids putting on the event for the younger ones. The adults really didn't help at all--only suppying the yard to have it in.
I wonder, do they still have those things anymore?

Thanks G-Ma. After publishing this I thought of books. Children need to be read to regularly starting while they are still in the womb.
Great hub. My son has a wooden Noah's Ark, complete with pairs of animals and Mr. and Mrs, and he adores it. It's usually his pre-bedtime toy, and gets him to calm down a bit.
That is so good LondonGirl! Reading a story to him might also get him to calm down and so will a bath in lavendar soap. Lavender soothes and calms. You could burn a lavender candle while giving him his before bedtime bath and while you are getting him ready for bed.
We do stories after the bath, and we have a baby lavender bubble bath. He's so enegetic, it takes serious effort to calm him down!
The best source of toys I found for my kids was Mindware.com. I just looked to make sure they ship all over and there was a long list of countries there. They specialize in toys that are educational.
I will have these in mind for mt son, whose first birthday is coming up!!
Love the ending! I am really pro imagination and interaction when it comes to kids activities. Storytime is a great part of a winding down time for kids before bed. My kids have their favorites and I have mine. I like vintage children's books, the ones that have children depicted in a sweet, calm atmosphere with little cherub faces.
Thumbs up Lady Guinevere
Thank you all for your many comments. LondonGirl, Have you tried running around until he drops before bathtime and after dinner., I know your bodies aren't ready for that but it may help and he may just sleep better. How old is your son?
He's 3, and runs around pretty much all day. He's just rarely tired, and always on the go. I want some of what he's on (-:
I always said that if we could bottle that up it would be great when we need it!! He will grow out of it eventually.Enjoy it while it lasts because they grow up so fast! Time flys when you're having fun.
I have updated this hub. I unpublished i,t made another text box, and then republished it. I added Puppets to the list of things that don't use plastic or batteries. Have fun!!!
excellent hub! A close friend of mine highly dislikes store bought toys and as such has chosen to decorate her newborn's nursery by hand and make all home made toys. It came out beautifully and the toys are functional as well as educational (age appropriate of course). It turned out beautifully! Needless to say I plan to enlist her help when I have a child!
Oooh I like her idea. Wouldn't be nice to have mnore of these types of toys?! Though the plastic industry wouldn't like it.
I still have some toys my Grandad made. He made my mother a dolls' house when she was 6, wired for electricity and with curtains etc my Granny made. Isaac's not allowed to play with that yet, he's still a bit enthusiastic!
He does get to play with the fire engine Grandad made for my uncle, and the toy sweet shop he made for me.
Londongirl, that sounds wonderful Older toys that didn't need anything to run them but imagination are the best and it fosters the growth of the child better than video games and things that already do what they can imagine.
Here are some good toys for children with no mechanical parts and are safe.

Most of the toys I used while doing childcare were made of wood and very well made...I would order from several places...one favorite was "The Magic Cabin" and I love the Melissa and Doug things too, especially the puzzles...Always bought good books to read also...Nice hub sweetie...G-Ma :o) hugs & Peace
