Tracfone is a mobile service provider in the United States that is now under the company named American Movil. It has a customer subscription of over 10 million. It provides only prepaid services to the users with some value added features as well.

            The company actually came into existence in 1996 and named Topp Telecom. But in 2000, it was bought by American Movil and was named Tracfone wireless.

            The service is provided with three names; Tracfone, Net10 and safe-link. Out of these, safelink is supported by the government and offers a free handset and sometimes free airtime to deserving people. The cost of the calls and messages depend on the phone model being used. A cell phone like Nokia 1100, 2600 etc may have a different tariff than a set of Motorola and LG.

The company has upgraded its analog and TDMA service and now mostly provides GSM and CDMA-1 technology depending on the set.

            International calling is also available to countries which can be counted near 50 and a Tracfone toll free number first needs to be dialed in order to proceed with this service. And there is an option of neighbor calling charges that costs almost the same as a local call. For this, about 3 numbers from either Canada or Mexico can be given Tracfone and the call charges would be taken as a local call made within a country.
