When you come home from work the first thing you probably do is check your caller ID to see which phone calls you missed. In days past, you would check your answering machine and callback anyone who left a message. While many people still do this, most people call back people whose numbers appeared on their caller ID. You might also try searching like this, "(555) 124-8790".

Finding the number like this can be a bit of a shot in the dark but who knows, you might come up lucky. Keep in mind that you're trying to do something that isn't that easy.

You can trace a cell number by using an online directory.  You can forget about trying to look up the number in an online telephone directory like dex or yellowbook. There are several online directories that say they are free but don't believe them. Cell phone numbers are closely guarded secrets.

With a little bit of clever detective work, you can pretend to be someone else and simply ask who you are speaking with. Many people answer the phone with their first name. Some even answer the phone with their full name. You may just end up getting lucky. When it comes to detective work you will need to be creative and tracking down the owner of a cellphone number is sort of like detective work.

You might also try an old telemarketers trick and tell them that they won a prize. Of course you don't want to use your real name here. Use a phony name and tell them that they've won a prize and all you need is their name and address in order to be able to send it out to them. It might not work but maybe you will get lucky and they'll tell you the information that you need.

You might try calling the number at odd hours like during the middle of the night. Many people turn their cell phones off  at night. The same people often have their full name recorded on their voice mail. Call during the middle of the night when the phone is off and you might get the name right from their voice mail message.

Another tactic that might work is to call the number anonymously and pretend to be taking a survey. You might ask them if they have 5 minutes to take the survey. If they say yes, the first question that you should ask them is the name and address. If they ask you why you need that information, tell them it's to prove to your boss that you are actually making the phone calls and not just making the information up.
