Battle of Trafalgar

The Trafalgar Square has been constructed to commemorate the victory of the British against the French & Spanish naval forces during the Battle of Trafalgar .

Admiral Lord Nelson aboard the war ship HMS Victory led the British Royal Navy and fought this decisive sea battle known as "The Battle of Trafalgar "

This was fought with the combined fleets of the French Navy and Spanish Navy .

Nelson Column

Nelson column was erected to commemorate the great victory of England in 1805 against the naval forces of France and Spanish Armada in the Cape of Trafalgar.

Admiral Horatio Nelson was the Britain's greatest war hero who led the 27 British ships during this naval engagement with the enemy forces .

He was mortally wounded in this sea battle and lost his life for the nation.

The column was constructed in the period between 1840 to 1843.

Proportion:

The Nelson column is 46 Meters in height.

Just for your reference, the London Eye is 135 Meters in diameter.

Which means ,the London eye diameter is almost 3 times the height of the Nelson's column.

Another dimension, Lord Nelson's statue on the top of this column is 5.5 Meters

Admiral Horatio Nelson .

This is Admiral Horatio Nelson .

He had already lost his right arm prior to the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

And, I also learnt  that during this battle he was shot on his left shoulder by a sniper. The National Maritime Museam at Greenwich displays the dress which General Nelson was wearing at the time of the mortal wound caused by a mortar shell fired by the enemy ships.

That dress clearly shows the hole caused by the bullet on the left shoulder.

Lions of courage

At the base of the Nelson column are four giant lions.I think these symbolise the Courage,Gallantry and Bravery among other virtues.

The lions are sitting facing outwards at the four base corners of the column which also symbolise guarding & vigil at all the times.

By the way, these Lions were added to the monument later on ( around 1867)

All work no play ?

Trafalgar square hosts many cultural activities.

One can enjoy a variety of events at this junction.

When we there, a dance performance was going on which was based on Indian classical dance form ( Katthak).
