Traffic Driving You Nuts?!

Keeping Sane on the Way to Work
I hate traffic. And I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. After spending 2 years in Los Angeles traffic, and then moving back to Boston to deal with the parking lot that we call 95 South, I have finally found ways that keep me entertained and keep me from making gestures at other drivers...
- One of the most fun ways that I keep myself from road-rage is blasting music that I can sing to. Either songs on the radio or I bring my own collection of great music. I have a mini performance in my car, dancing and singing, and not paying attention to the fact that the cars in front of me aren't moving.
- Books on tape...or in these modern times, books on CD are a great invention. You can choose whichever genre you enjoy the most, and listen to an intriguing story or learn about the trees in Africa. It's both an entertaining and educational way to pass the time.
- Speaking of educational...Have you ever wanted to learn a new language? French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Moroccan, you name it, now is the time to learn it. With most languages, you can get instructions on a CD and learn while you drive.
- Carpooling! In these times of high gas prices, this is not only a great way to save money, but another way to keep you occupied instead of honking your car horn at the guy in front of you. You have a friend in your passenger seat to keep you company!
- And, last but not least, don't join rush hour. Go get a cup of coffee, finish up any errands you need to run, grab a bite to eat with friendly co-workers. Stay off the roads during the heaviest traffic periods. This not only keeps you sane, but also keeps you in touch with your friends and you get more done outside of work.
Hey, if you're one of those lucky folks who don't have to sit in traffic every day back and forth from home to work, kudos to you! But if you're one of the millions who do, I hope these tips are helpful. Enjoy, and use the time wisely!

Your first idea can keep all those around entertained too.;-)
Thank the Goddess that I am no longer in the commuting rush hour traffic. I spent enough years there, listening to radio, books on tape, and singing my head off (to the delight or horror of my fellow commuters...I like what Health Conscious had to say).
The terrors of a trip like this? One day, while traffic was nearly stopped on one of our Interstate connectors, I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw a young man snoring. He had his head back, mouth open, eyes closed. Somehow, he was inching in traffic just as I was. But he was asleep! I guess some kind of mental remote was in operation.
I changed lanes for my own safety, to get him off my tail. The good news is, he didn't cause an accident, and I guess he wound up where he had to go. Wish I had had that nap.
All good advice. I had joined the "traffic rat-race" a few years and realized quickly I needed some sanity saving ideas. I've got additional pieces of advice in my own hub for those interested.

Boston and L.A....two horrid traffic towns. Good luck with your transportation woes! At least the Boston area has tremendous mass transit...something L.A. can't offer. Welcome to hubpages! Great hub name!
