Traffic From Twitter Not
54Twitter Is the Big Bird in the Room
Twitter Is For Social Networking, Not Traffic! Well Maybe!
I have used Twitter with Squidoo and with Hubpages. Everytime I update my lens (Squidoo Website) I can send a tweet. Still, I have found that twitter is not a big driver of traffic. It is a way to get a lot of backlinks, which could improve pagerank, which could bring traffic.
So, Twitter is a service that may do great things for someone who is super active with lots of followers. I don't know that it will help the average Joe, or me, the average Gary. My view of Twitter is that it is good for announcements. It may be a way to communicate online, replacing a comment thread. (Update: Scroll down to update and see also http://featuredusers.com/referral/bgamall)
Squidoo has this new thing where they post comments which are really Twitter comments, on a new type of lens (Squidoo website). That may prove to be more helpful in getting your site noticed than other Twitter activities. I may go play around with that or I may not. In some ways I think that Twitter is a bit of a fad, though I have been known to be wrong before. It is very difficult for me to use 100 words or less to express a thought. That causes Twitter to drive me Tweeting mad. Just kidding, I'm a kidder. Well, it is annoying anyway.
Maybe someday you will be able to Tweet your ride, ha! Oh, I digress with a lame joke. I have decided to provide a few links to sites that seem to work even better than Twitter regarding traffic. One will give you immediate traffic and the other will give you traffic down the line as their directory gains prestige. Both will help you with backlinks and they are not so scattered as Twitter. I would think you would have to be a bird brain to be really successful on Twitter. Get it? Bird brain, lol. Just checking to see if you are paying attention!!
While I have talked a lot about Squidoo here, and I so like the people there, I have really great things to say about Hubpages because of the fairness in payment planning with Hubpages that I think is more ethical (if you have an adsense account), and about the faster loading of pages, and about the great questions I can try to answer like this one about Twitter. So all you bird brains out there, shake a tailfeather with Twitter. I will stop by once in awhile and see what is happening in Twitterland.
I have provided other views on videos below, and if you have a gazillion followers you may get a few people to your site if you promise them wealth and happiness and enhanced body parts.
Update: While I still believe that twitter for the majority of people is used as a social medium, for a growing number of people it is used as a way to share websites, ideas, marketing, etc. I found the lazy man's way to get thousands of followers. Go to Tweepme.com and sign up. Then pay the one time fee of about 20 bucks and you will gain thousands of followers and generate some traffic to your hubpages. I highly recommend this for anyone who is not a celebrity or a major generator of traffic elsewhere. I have shared my sex advice websites and fashion hub websites and celebrity websites, as well as my political hubs and have received traffic.
Make certain that you do not follow people too fast or you will have to get followers (added automatically with the Tweepme service) to balance out before you can follow again.

- Digg Is Dead Long Live Tweetmeme
Clearly the new bookmarking is tweetmeme. Unless Twitter allows other bookmarking services to interface with Twitter, Digg and the other bookmarking services will go the way of the Edsel. Oh, I date myself.... - TweepMe - Get Twitter Followers.
TweepMe.com is a fast and easy way to get new Twitter followers easily. - reTweet.it
This is an interesting application for twitter. This allows you to retweet the sites of others and also allows you to buy retweets if you don't have time to manually retweet. This is a pretty awesome site... - Get More Twitter Followers! - FeaturedUsers.com
Different than Tweepme. Viral! You pay as little as 10 dollars one time and you get a promotional url. Then you use that url to get others to sign up. If they buy 1000 ads you get 100 free banner ads, ie 10 percent of your signups views. - Gary Anderson on Twitter.

Jewelsofawe how do you make it work for you from a traffic standpoint? Gary
Thanks, Gary, This is very helpful. After just a month on Twitter, I have had 1 click to HubPages, and about 10 to my website. It's not a lot of work so I'll continue to experiment for a while. But I can't see why some site owners swear by it as a traffic building device.
We'll see. Thanks for you help and the extra info. Much appreciated!
No problem Bruce. I think people may come up with more innovative ways to use twitter, but for me it is more a social networking tool so far. Interesting you have a similar opinion. When I wrote this I didn't know your opinion. Gary
Similar to you Gary on Squidoo, EzineArticles automatically tweets my articles for me. I never really checked to see how much traffic I gained from Twitter, but as you say it is really a great social networking site. I like twitter, I don't depend on it for traffic, but it is a really cool site to visit.
Great hub!
Thanks for the complement. I didn't know jEzinearticles did that Lisa. I hope your articles are spread far and wide. I have used a few. What subjects do you cover there? Gary
Check your stats on each hub to see where your traffic is coming from. I have found that with more than 400,000 hubbers most of your traffic comes from fellow hubbers.
Hi Linda, I would agree and say that so far about 60 percent of total traffic is from hubbers.
Another twit from twittersville after rereading your hub. I use a laptop computer and have the Y! search box and the Ask Search box available to the left of the computer screen at all times. That way if you change your mind about twittering, because you are correct hub does not have a direct link, just enter the hub url in one box and the twitter url in the other box and toggle between the two. Hub has an excellent tool to copy and paste the URL that you would like to link from its share icon at the bottom of each article. But if you still do not twitter, you can toggle between Squidoo and HubPages.
Twitter is just for a bit of fun.
That is the best way to use it I think. But you can learn things from twubs if you look up various hashtags that interest you.

I like twitter. I agree that I don't like limiting my thoughts to 100 characters but otherwise I like it.
