Training Your Dog To Sit and Stay With A Dog Training Collar
55After you have properly introduced your dog to his dog training collar, you can then train him to perform various commands that every dog owner should be able to get their dog to do. One of the most important commands to teach a dog is to sit or stay. This is not only for the safety of the dog and necessary for every hunter, but it also maintains control of the animal when around other people.
Using The Dog Training Collar
The dog training collar is a receiver that sends frequency stimulation to your dog upon you hitting the button on the receiver. You hold the receiver and can send a slightly unpleasant stimulation to your dog that will let him know that he is behaving incorrectly. This is not cruel to train the animal in this way at all. In fact, it is cruel not to train the dog as an untrained dog is nothing but a nuisance and often winds up at the pound being put down. Using a dog training collar is a humane way to get your animal to be not only a good hunting companion, but a well behaved dog.
Showing The Dog What To Do
The first thing you want to do is to show the dog what you want him to do. If you want him to stay, you should put your hand out in front of him and tell him to "stay." Say it distinctly. Your dog will not understand what you mean the first time you do this. Or the second, or the third.
If you want your dog to sit, you can gently sit him down while issuing the command to "sit." This is usually the easiest command for the dog to pick up, but again, he will most likely not get it on the first few tries.
Using The Dog Collar
When you use the dog collar, in combination with voice commands, your dog starts to associate the command with what you want him to do. You should try to train him to sit first and then move on to stay. If he refuses, you send him a minor stimulation. You then repeat the command. If he refuses again, you increase the stimulation. Sooner or later, he starts to understand what you want him to do. You can then work on stay.
Rewarding The Dog
When you are training a dog, you have to understand that they do not retain a memory. Yelling and screaming at the dog is ineffective as is hitting him. In most cases, the dog has no idea what he has done to deserve your ire. When you use the training collar, however, he gets the stimulation right away. Again, this is not meant to hurt the dog in any way, but to get him to obey simple commands.
It is important for any dog owner to have control over their animal. Sitting and staying are necessary commands for the dog to obey, whether he is a pet or a hunting dog. This can potentially save your dog from harm and prevent him from being a nuisance to others. Using a dog collar to train your dog to sit and stay will allow the training process to go by much faster, allow the dog to better understand your commands and provide you with an obedient hunting companion.
