Transgender, cross dresser, transsexual, gay, bisexual... . What a soup of names and handles. I can understand why many people say that they reject handles which put them into little boxes. Still, if we did not have the handles, it would take forever to have a conversation. They really do serve well for purposes of short-hand. Just imagine talking about someone and always being required to give a detailed description instead of simply using a name which implies a ton of information.

So, I will forge ahead here and give my thoughts on transgender and cross dressing. I think I have a good point to make and others who have heard me tend to agree. Either they agree or they are being very kind.

I have a TG (transgendered) friend who likes to say that gender is found in the head and sex is found in the ..., well, quite a ways below the head. How true that is. Gender is all about how a person perceives himself of herself on the continuum of expressions that range from very feminine (Marylin Monroe ?) to very masculine (John Wayne?) . In that oversimplified regard, a man is transgendered if he feels that he exists way off towards the feminine end of the continuum. This says little about sexual preference and behaviors and nothing at all about physical parameters. It is more of a statement about a man who feels comfortable in a kinder, gentler world. What makes his perception a problem is his inability to give expression to that role in his restrictive world. A man is not expected to prefer a discussion of cooking on Monday morning to a discussion of the Sunday games. So, while he might enjoy the football discussion, he must suppress his comments on cooking or fashion. In most situations, he is forced to put the feminine side "in the closet". Still, TG is a large part of who he is; it is a major factor of his identity.

Then there are cross dressers. Most TG people find themselves cross dressing or wishing to cross dress. It is a natural way in which to express a gender shift in a society which places so much value on appearances. It is a means by which a TG person can find a huge relief from the stress of hiding one's gender orientation in a hostile world. Put very simply: it just feels good. It is not a big deal for a woman to dress in masculine clothing but a man must not wear dresses and heels to work. The exception are those men who have actually come out in their worlds and have earned the right to dress as they wish. All honor and laud to these guys. Cross dressing is not the only way that a gender shift can be expressed; it is merely most obvious and the most fulfilling on the basis of easily seen self-imaging. But dressing is an expression; it is not an identity.

We confuse each other when I say to you: "Oh, I am a cross dresser." It would be better to say "Oh, I am a transgendered person and something that I do upon occasion is to cross dress." But, then I go back to the first paragraph here and simply use the quickest language to say my piece and move on even though I have falsely identified myself.

My point to all this? Transgendered is who I am; cross dressing is something that I do. The distinction is fundamental. We should never confuse what someone does with who someone is. It is true that we have only a person's behaviors to use as measuring stick when we meet them casually. However, how many times have you "gotten to know someone" and found yourself forming a very different opinion of them as a person?

I'll say it again: Transgendered is a big part of who I am; cross dressing is something that I do.

Interesting Hub. I must confess your definition of Transgender isn't what I understood by it at all. The transgender people I know, have a strong feeling they were born in the wrong body. If it were only a preference for feminine interests or activities, they wouldn’t consider going through the traumatic process of actually changing their body, which many do. As you say, though, which gender they feel they are, has nothing to do with the gender they prefer as a partner.

I always thought cross-dressing was something that heterosexual people did, without necessarily having a desire to change their gender.

This is where handles get to be both helpful and confusing. The feelings of being in the wrong body are the mark of a transexual person who actually wants TO BE the opposite sex and will eventually have surgery to make it a physical reality. A transgendered person is fairly content with his or her assigned sex and body and desires only to be able to express aspects of the opposite sex's gender.

And, as a matter of fact, the majority of TG people ARE heterosexual. A great many - myself for instance - are happily married to a spouse of the opposite sex.

Thank you for your comment.

There are times I wish I could be a woman because they get to wear great clothes whenever they want and wherever they want. Of course, being a typical male otherwise, I have a man's perspective on things and were I a woman, I'd always look like I just walked out of a Frederick's of Hollywood store. Trashy but fun!

Thank you for an intelligent analysis of what it is to be transgendered. There is such confusion and misunderstanding, as evidenced by the first post. I, like you, am transgendered, and occasionally like (actually love!) to dress entirely feminine. It is just part of who I am. Hopefully, we will keep moving forward in understanding of people like us.

Great hub, and thanks for expressing so well what I believe a lot of us feel.

I am an adnrogyne, and I suppose there is a lot of confusion there too, so maybe I will write another hub page....

It is great to realise that that's what I akm. I'm no longer a failed man. I'm not a failed transgender either, which some people may want to claim. After all, I don't feel any urge to change my body. I don't feel any urge to "pass" as a woman. I'm not a woman, and having pretended to be a man most of my life, there's no advantage in just being a faux woman.

I do like to wear feminine clothes, and I have long hair, which might give away to the world a couple of signals. "Oh, there's a girly boy", said a woman passing me in the street talking to, probably, her grand-daughter. I wasn't offended. Indeed, recognition at last, and she was being very perceptive.

I don't overtly cross-dress in public, although maybe my tastes for bright colours, patterns and silky materials isn't classic macho male. If I had my way, men would be able to wear skirts anyway, and hosiery, for that matter, as they did a couple of hundred years ago.

I sometimes wear various items of lingerie under my jeans, and an observant person may sometyimes spot the sheer nylon over my feet instead of boring workaday socks. That's my compromise with the world.

Clothing is only an outward and visible sign, of course, and not the main business. I enjoy flowers, nice scents, doing creative things, and I don't get any joy from competitive sport, drinking with lads in the bar or driving at a hundred miles an hour. I was never any good at rough boys' games, and all this time later I know why.

Wonderful hub and thank you for the clear explanation as Ihave friends as well who are also transgendered and cross-dressers and love them dearly for who they are. In our society people should not be so judgemental as they need to look in there own back doors. If a man wants to dress like a woman more power to him and vice versa as our entire country needs to get along and not be so stuffy. My friend looks absolutely dreamy when he dresses as a woman and sometimes he looks better then me:(. Many women can learn so much from transgendered and Gay men as they will certainly teach you how a lady is supposed to be. Sophisticated, Elegant and absolutely beautiful. Love the article and my hat is off to you!!!
