About the City

Barcelona is a beautiful city with well maintained roads , effecient and state of the art metro rail service and metro buses. It is a place surrounded by mountains on the one side and sea on the other side. Buildings are a mix of old and new. You could find many old buildings in this nice city. There are a lot of good hotels out there in the city.

One good and cost effective hotel is Expo Barcelona. Typical facilities available in this hotel are a room with attached bathroom, TV and Mini Bar. You could order food to your room or you can go the restaurant on the 3rd floor. The Expo hotel provides WiFI internet connectivity. But it is not free. You have to pay for a day or an hour. An hour costs around 5 Euros and a day costs 25 Euros.

How to travel in the City

City provides good metro service. You can travel via the underground Metro rail service or can board the metro buses. Metro train is the best, fastest and cost effective mode of travel in the city. The city can be purchased from the automatic machines at the station. You can purchase a ticket for 10 travels at a cost of 7.7 Euros. Using this you can travel 10 times for a period. When i visited barcelona i purchased this ticket and it satisfied my travel needs for about a week of time i stayed there. Using this ticket you can also board the metro buses. Another mode of travel is to hire cabs. You can see cabs all over the city. But they are expensive.

Safety

Is Barcelona a safe city ?. There is widespread pick pocketing, bag snatching and robbery/
Hence you should take preventive measures so that you wont become a victim of this. These elements operate mainly in the public places like metro stations and ramblas (main promenade through the central Barcelona). Typical pattern of attack is one person distracts you while another pickpockets you.
When you board the train pay special attention. In one such mode of operation one person might block your entry to the train by standing in front the door and suddenly bend down and pretend like searching some thing that has fallen near you legs. The person might search near your legs and sometime might lift your leg to see whether you have stepped on the item. You are distracted and during this time another person standing at the station would pickpocket you. Beware of  this. I feel victim of this attack during my visit to Barcelona and lost around 200 Euros.

To travel safely behave like you are resident of  Barcelona. Try to dress like the local people and take steps not advertise you as a tourist. If you hold a map , then it is an indication that you are a tourist.

Keep your cameras inside your bag. Hanging them around the neck would make yourself  clearly recognizable as tourist.  Don't carry too much money in your wallet or bag. Keep only a small amount that is required and keep the rest secured in the safe locker provided by most hotels. Pay attention to your bags , briefcases and other belongings when you visit a cafe or a restaurant.

Keep your self alert and vigilant and enjoy the nice city.
