Just because gas prices are sky high today doesn't mean your travel and vacation budget needs to be sky high, too. There are many ways to skimp and save on expenses and other travel-related costs so that you can still jump in your car and hit the highway. Here are just a few to get you started on your next adventure.
Automobile Associations / Groups
Check into joining an auto club, if you are not already a member of one. Top notch clubs like AAA (the American Automobile Association) offer quite a few ways for you to save money. They have a Member's Discount booklet that lists all types of specials like saving money on parking at airports and discounts on eateries, accommodations and amusement parks and events all over America.
In addition, they offer roadside assistance, a must for travelers far from home among strangers in a strange land! Get fuel brought to your car when you run out. Get help for a locksmith if you lock your keys in your car at the campground (OK, I confess - I did that!) And get a tow when you car breaks down (OK, been there, done that, too J
To find a program in your area, head to a popular search engine and start searching keyword phrases like, "automobile association + state." Then check out the websites that are listed or call the companies to see what they offer and have them mail you info.
National Park Service
No need to spend big bucks on accommodations, local attractions, fine dining and the rest. Instead, head to the website for the National Park Service and check out parks in neighboring states to save on fuel costs. Pitch a tent or rent a cabin, checking online first for reservation costs. Then bring your own gear for fun: hiking boots, backpack, snacks, water bottle, and other goodies.
Enjoy fine dining at your campfire in the evenings with nature to listen to instead of piped-in music. And network with fellow travelers for even more fun - swimming, kayaking, fishing, participating in nature hikes and presentations given by the park rangers and more.
Camping is cheap and you can leave lots of your stuff right in your car, living out of it on-the-go. Hint: clean it out first to get rid of trash and junk that takes up space. Then load it up with your gear, clothing and food items, etc. And add a nice blanket and pillow in the back for when you pull over to nap for awhile at rest stops.
