Travel in the Outback of Australia
59Some Important Australian Outback Travel Tips
The Outback of Australia is isolated and great care should be taken when driving through this immense and distinctive area. Follow these key tips for safe outback driving:
- Check the best time of year to travel.
- Check your road carefully.
- Before departing for your journey, give someone a copy of your itinerary and agree on a date and time to contact them to let them know that all is fine.
- Ensure your vehicle is appropriate for outback travel.
- Do not overload the vehicle.
- Think about hiring a two-way radio if your are intending to travel in very isolated areas.
- Carry the best maps you can, but always confirm with the locals on road conditions, fuel availability and weather conditions.
- Plan your fuel use and refueling points. Consider that service stations in the outback may have limited opening hours.
- Do not stray from your planned route as you may consume extra fuel or you could get lost.
- When traveling on very isolated roads, inform local authorities of your course and planned arrival time.
- Carry adequate supplies of food, water and fuel.
- Try to avoid driving at dusk, night or dawn. Wild or farm animals may stray onto the road and their actions can be unpredictable.
- When driving on an unmade road towards an approaching vehicle, pull off to the left of the road, keeping the right-hand wheels on the road surface at all times. Slow down but do not stop as the road shoulders may be soft.
- Be aware of dust on the road which may hide potholes and washouts.
- Always take an emergency supply of water – five liters per individual per day in hot areas.
- If you break down, stay with your vehicle. It is much easier to locate a vehicle than an individual.

I've always wanted to go to Australia. Great tips, I'll keep them in mind when I get the chance to visit.
Great picture too.
And take a spare, spare tire! Flats in the outback are a real pain. And it happened to me once in NW Australia - I was glad to be able to drive on and still have another spare on board. People from other countries just can't really imagine just how few people you'll see - such a huge country, so few inhabitants.
I think your last point is actually the most important! Amazing photo - where is it from?
