Traveling Games
54"Are we there yet?"
The most dreaded four words for any parent. Not to mention any caretaker traveling with young or easily bored children. As a frequent traveler, I have seen "Finding Nemo" put on for the third time in a row. If you are looking for new sources of entertainment that involve creativity or pen and paper, you have come to the right place. Depending on the age of the individuals, some of these will take better than others. Then again, i still love some of these easy games.
Pen and Paper Games
- You draw dots about 1/4 inch apart in the shape of a square or rectangle. After the dots are complete the game begins. It helps to have two different color pens, but one will do. One team member goes and draws a line from one dot to another in a up-down or right-left pattern (no diagonals). Then the other person draws a line somewhere else. The goal of the game is to create as many boxes as possible. The catch: you don't want to be the person to put the third line on a box, the next person can close the box and get the point!
- Hangman- One person places spaces for each letter of a object, movie, food, ect. Ex: Finding Neverland would be _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. Above that, the person draws a sort of 7 shape which will be added to as the game goes on. The goal of the other person(s) is to figure out the answer by guessing one letter at a time. You want to get the answer before the man is hanged, and you can guess the answer at any time- but it will earn you another body part if you get it wrong.
- Tic-Tac-Toe- You know the drill. Make the # sign big on a peice of paper. First person draws an x or an o in a square. The second person draws the opposite sign. Keep going til one person gets three in a row diagonally, up and down, or sideways.
No Materials Needed
- Rock, Paper, Scissors- easy enough, you know the rules
- I-SPY - Start with the phrase "I spy something..." and fill in the blank with a color or a shape. With other players the game can be more complicated, but easy to play when there is no paper handy.
- I'm going on a picnic- Start by saying "I'm going on a picnic, and I'm bringing..." You pick things to bring alphabetically, so for example "I'm going on a picnic and I'm bringing apples, boxes, carrots"
- Teach a song- this depends on the age of the person, but I have found that Black Socks is a winner for anyone over 5.
