Where to go in Croatia?
For those of you that have never been you have to go. Here is an itinerary that I promise you will love. (Keep in mind you can flip the itinerary around as well)
#1 Fly into Split, spend time visiting:
Diocletian's Palace Old Town (general); Around the Center Cathedral & Bell Tower; Grgur Ninski statue; Riva & Harbour area Surroundings (mainland); Surrounding Islands Museums & Galleries; Pjaca (Narodni Trg / Square)
#2 Take a ferry out to the islands: (Brac, Vis, Hvar, etc)
Beautiful Beaches and Coastline Venetian Streets, Houses, and Architecture Amazing Views St. Stephen's Cathedral The Fortress (Citadel) Just outside Hvar town Hvar Harbour Trg sv. Stjepana (Main Square) Franciscan Monastery Day Trip to Blue Grotto and Vis Island
#3 Ferry back to Split and drive to Dubrovnik. (Incredible drive, very safe and beautiful places to stop along the way)
#4 Arrive in Dubrovnik:
City walls; Old City; The Stradun Beaches Gates of Pile; Big Onofrije's Fountain; Fort Lovrijenac; Walking; exploring; Clock Tower; Rector's Palace; Day trips to Korcula; Mljet:
I would advise everyone to get a lonely planet book and follow some of the top things to do in each place. Also, keep in mind that if you need to take a short trip you can just fly into dubrovnik, drive to the surrounding islands, venture off to montenegro and just take up as much of the scenery, beaches and history as you can.
As far as places to stay I would open a travel book and stay somewhere that is within your budget. (You'll want to spend money elsewhere) However, if at all possible you should stay as close as you can to the old town city walls in Dubrovnik. (That way you can walk almost everywhere)

Croatia is truly a beautiful country, which is well worth to discover personally. I'd travelled all over Croatia many times and I especially know its beautiful coast from Savudrija and Umag in the north, all the way south to the historical pearls of Dubrovnik, Split, Sibenik and Trogir, and many islands in the Adriatic sea on that way. It helps a lot, if one speaks local language - Croatian (even though, most of younger people speak English) (luckily, I do--), and I advise every one to find a friend online from Croatia, before travel there to really experience the country and its rich culture. Places, food, drinks and parties there are just 'delicious'.
Thanks for the great note! Yes, Croatia is heaven. I have traveled there many times with my family and I speak with the language. (Helps quite a bit) Regardless, English is taught everywhere and it is incredibly easy to travel around. In fact, I just had a friend who is from Brisbane who traveled to Croatia and told me it is his favorite place now and is very happy I recommended it. :)
My grand father was from little Croatian village on Slovenian/Croatian border and I really spent quite a lot of time travelling all over the countries of old Yugoslavia. What a marvelous world (if I delete atrocities of wars). I loved sailing in Adriatic sea, Kornati archipelago, Brijuni and many larger islands. I especially like Istrian peninsula (Pula, Motovun, Vodnjan) and Dubrovnik, even though I also need to admit that the old part of the capital city of Zagreb looks just amazing.

@solarshingles - Fantastic. My mother is from an island called Molat http://croatiatouristcenter.com/molat.htm off of Zadar. Beautiful place. My favorite islands are Brac, Hvar and Vis & Molat. (I'm bias of course) I have tons of great photos from over the years and should post them. Hopefully I'll get a chance shortly. Thanks for the note!
@Zsuzsy Bee - Thank you! Yeah, that was quite an incredible spot right behind the walls in Dubrovnik. Not sure if you can tell from the pictures but there was a little cafe and the water was incredible.

Great page about Croatia. I visited Bol on island Brac last summer and loved it. Would recommend it to all, it has the cooles beach in the worls!
