Malta is a beautiful island just south of Sicily (the southern region of Italy). The distance between  Valletta (the capital city) and the nearest poin in Sicily (Pozzallo) is of about 90 Km. Found in the hear of the Mediterranean sea, these guys, the Maltese, live a happy, care-free life. With beautiful sceneries and a warm climate throughout the whole year, you can be sure that visiting this country is going to be a nice relaxing adventure.

If you go there one day, make sure you visit the old city of Mdina. This is also named Citta Vecchia by the italians, because it is more than 3000 years old. Archaeological evidence suggest a date even further back in time: the first settlers of Mdina arrived in 4000 BC. It was the old Capital of Malta, before the goverment decided they should change it to the more modern city of Valletta. Mdina is history itself, taking the form of old buildings and ancient ruins that can be found all over the place.

Another important „ancient” city is Hagar (near Valletta), which is filled with prehistoric temples. The greatest of these temples is Hagar Qim, which, along with other neolithic temples in Malta, represent the oldest human buildings in the world!

But it’s not only history that represents the greatest attractions of this island. The most interesting activities for tourists are diving, snorkelling, swimming and walking. This is because of the beautiful bays that are spread throughout the coast, each one different from the other. Talking about bays, we should mention Balluta Bay (St Julians), St Thomas Bay, St Paul’s Bay and Xemxija Bay. They are beautiful and peaceful, they are places where you can go with your family to relax, or with your friends to have fun.

Tourism in Malta has experienced a boost during the last two years, especially because of the low cost flights that have been implemented. Companies like Ryanair, EasyJet, Transavia and even British Airlines will fly you to Malta in no time, at really reasonable prices.

The locals are known to be very friendly. Their first official language is Maltese, but their second one is, of course, English, due to the fact that the island was a British colony for many years. Also, if you only know Italian, you should have no problems at all, as many locals speak it.

As for accomodations, the luxury Malta hotels vary between two stars and five, the highest rated of them all being found in Valletta, Gozo and Balluta Bay. You can also choose to stay in private houses, because many locals make a living out of this type of tourism.

So, if you were wondering where to spend your next holiday, feel free to consider the beautiful island of Malta, with its historical cities , lavish hotels and interesting offers.

As I mentioned in another comment, Navy friends were stationed in Malta and raved about it. So it's always been on my list of places to visit someday. However, I didn't realize it was so close to Sicily. Hmmmm....

You really should go - it's wonderful. I've been a couple of times, and my uncle married a Maltese woman.
