Travian
Travian is a German browser-based game developed by Travian Games GmbH that is largely based on a predecessor game called Tribal Wars. In 2006, the game was ranked first in the "best browser-based game with over 10,000 players" category of the German website GamesDynamite. The game's developers drew roughly from Classical antiquity and particularly from the Roman Empire to create a predominantly militaristic real-time strategy. Along with two English versions, and the original German version, the game has been translated into 30 other languages, and today has just over 3 million players worldwide. It is programmed in PHP and runs by definition in the browser. It was the first game of its type to be playable through a mobile phone, using a java platform
The Game
The player starts as a leader of a small village, with one building, the main building, and some fields, where resources are produced. Troops can be produced once a player has a barracks. These can either be used to attack villages, often in order to steal resources, or to defend against attacking troops. Once the player has fulfilled certain criteria, he can find other villages or conquer those of an enemy.
The aim of the game is to increase population and to control as many villages as possible. After a certain amount of time, further buildings and concepts are introduced, namely the introduction of the wonders of the world. The game ends when a player has finished constructing the wonder in a Natar village.
There are three tribes, the Romans, the Gauls, and the Teutons. Each has their own characteristics and an appropriate style of play: the Romans having a balanced set of attributes, the Gauls being largely defensive, and the Teutons geared towards a more aggressive style.
Criticism
Some complaints of the game surround the "kill camping" or "farming" done by older players on new or otherwise abandoned accounts. A major issue concerning farming is the Travian programmers' refusal to limit the number of attacks done on any one farming community, and the refusal to clear "abandoned" accounts more frequently.
Some players create multiple accounts in order for them to be personal farms (an account whose sole purpose is to build resources so that the player may use his or her master account to attack and gain resources exponentially).
Although there are Multihunters (whose jobs are to find these players and lock those accounts), they have been proven to be ineffective, as they rely solely on IP Addresses. Since these abusers routinely use legally purchased IP Maskers, it is impossible for Multihunters to prove which people are abusing the system.
Alliances
Travian is geared towards cooperative play - resources can be traded between players and towns can be reinforced with another players' troops. An in-game alliance feature is also available, providing the main catalyst for strategic play within Travian; players join and fight together for mutual benefit. Within an alliance, players can view attack and defence information for all alliance members, and also benefit from improved communication tools such as mass alliance-wide in-game messages. Because the maximum number of members in an alliance is 60, 'wings' tend to form as an alliance develops. Wings may fight and destroy each other. Towards the end of a round, different alliances often join together, resulting in larger coalitions (meta alliances) - other diplomatic agreements include Non Aggression Pacts.
Each Travian server ends with the "end game" sequence. For normal servers it begins after about 300 days, and for speed (3x) servers it begins after about 100 days. The Natars, a race controlled by the computer are released. As the players on the server begin to build the world wonders that they have to capture from the dreaded Natars they meet resistance. They will, every 5 levels, attack the villages with wonders until level 95 when they will attack every new level. The first alliance that gets to level 100 wins the server.
Financing
Travian is financed through players upgrading accounts with Travian Plus and Web banners. Faced with further financial difficulties of maintaining Travian, a further 'Gold' feature was introduced, which was met with controversy. The introduction of 'Gold' allows players to directly influence the game mechanics: for instance, by increasing resource production, instant completion of building and researches or applying a strength bonus to troops. Most recently, Travian has expanded to include a "Travian Shop" which includes many things from Shirts to mugs and many other things.
Cheats and Strategies
Two common Travian Strategies are Booming and Rusing.
The Booming strategy involves focusing your efforts into buidling the economic might of your village. After establishing a strong economy the player begins to build and army. The advantage to this strategy is the ability to recover from a loss and build your army. The downside being that you are vulnerable to the attacks of other players.
Rushing is the opposite of Booming. Instead of building a strong economy the player focuses on building a strong army and using it to to attack other players. The Rushing player can then build his economy and resources by acquiring it from other players. The downside to the Rushing strategy is that if the army loses it will be hard to rebuild without a strong economy
Cheats and Tips
Try to keep a high crop amount: If you focus on producing Lumber, Clay, or Iron, your crop is reduced. If you keep enough crop the game is much easier.
Attacks: If a player is attacking you, it`s the best to build all possible Structures to reduce your stored resources. Build hides if you need to hide more Troops - That will reduce your stored resources and decrease the battle losses.
You can alternatively send out the ressources to an friend, "attack" him with your Troops to secure them too. If the attack is over cancel the attack to your friend.
Please Note: Your friend must know that your attack is only to secure your troops. Otherwise he can think you will attack him really.
Multiple Attacks: If your enemy is getting more damaged than you after an attack, you can attack him twice.
CheatsWhile people desperatly search for Travian cheats, there are just not many around. The easiest way to gain an advantage is to purchase travian gold. With Travian gold you can get
- + 10% Defense
- + 10% Attack
- + 25% of any resource
