You Can Have a Fun Treadmill Workout

Why Treadmills Win The Argument

Treadmills are one of the most efficient ways of burning calories blasting fat and getting a good cardio workout. However, before getting one for their home gym, many people want to know whether there really is any advantage to treadmill running versus outdoor running. It seems like we can just go ahead and walk or run outside, so why spend the money on another piece of equipment?

Here we look at the advantages and disadvantages of treadmills over running outdoors to help you decide.

Disadvantages Of Treadmills Compared To Outdoor Running

1. Cost

This one doesn't need any explanation. Even a used treadmill is going to cost you more than running around your local park. Although if you have to drive to your local park first, you do have the cost of gas and wear on your car.

2. Space in the home

If you have a large home this will not bother you, but if you live in a tiny apartment you may not have a lot of space for home gym equipment like a treadmill. Keep in mind though that you can get foldaway treadmills for easy storage.

3. Fresh air

Running outside gets you into the fresh air, so it's likely to be better for your lungs than exercising indoors, even if you have all of the windows open. To get around this you could put your treadmill in the backyard in good weather.

Advantages Of Treadmills Compared to Running Outdoors

1. Weather

One of the greatest advantages of having a treadmill is that you can walk or run in any kind of weather. Rain, snow, ice, it doesn't matter, and you can run through a heatwave too. In your heated and air conditioned home you can always exercise at the perfect temperature. Also most treadmills now have on board cooling fans which helps keep you cooler in addition to the cooling of your home or apartment.

In addition not only is this more comfortable, but it is healthier also. Running on icy surfaces or in very high temperatures is risky for anyone. And let's face it, it's way more likely that you will keep to your exercise program if you don't have to go out in the rain.

2. Convenience

If you have a treadmill you can use it whenever you have a free moment. You do not have to get to the park first. All adults in the family can use it too, and you may find that family members who would not normally take any exercise are motivated by having a well equipped home gym.

You also don't have to wrry about missing your favorite TV, special on TV or the latest award show as you can watch TV while you are on the treadmill. Some treadmills now have built in TV's in their consoles..They also have built in speakers so that you can listen to your ipod of Mp3 player.

3. Personal safety

For women this can be a big issue, but men too can be at risk of muggings or other attacks when running in the park or on the street. Even in the best neighborhoods a circular route will usually take you through some dark or lonely places, and even though you probably try to be out when there are other runners, you will find yourself running alone sometimes.

Even if you live in a safe neighborhood, you do have to be on the lookout for loose dogs, and pot holes.

4. Better shock absorption

Your treadmill will have a surface that is professionally designed for absorption of the shocks that running can give. Without this, your knees and hips can suffer a lot of damage from regular running.

People who run on hard surfaces like a sidewalk can do more damage than good to their overall health in the long term.

The alternative is to run on grass, but that can be slippery if there is mud or dew, or too hard in summer. Treadmills are a better option for your joints and newer models allow you to adjust the cushioning to your specifications..

5. Measurable resultsIf you are running around outdoors you usually do not have any way to measure if you are achieving your goals and increasing your fitness.

Sure, you may time yourself, but many factors can influence the time it takes you to complete your circuit, including the weather and traffic or walkers getting in your way. On a treadmill you have many ways to measure your progress including specially designed instruments.

You can track calories burned, distance, incline and speed. By keeping track of this information you will be able to match or exceed your previous workout.

6. Privacy

While some people love to strut their perfect physique around the park, for most of us there are advantages in not having the world watching us run!

At home it doesn't matter what you wear, whether you sweat or how much you weigh. Just lock the door and nobody is going to see.

All of this adds up to one vital point - having a home treadmill will make it easier for you to stick to your exercise program. Regularity is the most important thing to get the benefit of any exercise schedule, so you will not want to let the weather dictate when you can run. With a home treadmill you will be able to appreciate the advantages of treadmill running versus outdoor running for yourself.

What a load of crap. I would need some sort of anti-depressants if I ran on a treadmill.

1.-Yes weather can suck, but its not icey or super hot year round.

2.Convienent. Yeah its much easier to store a treadmill than to not store one. I still have to have running shoes, shorts ect.

3. Oh please people hurt themselves on treadmills all the time. Attacks are actually rarer than you think.

4. Better shock absorption is a myth-One that gets disputed everyday in internet newgroups

5. Really-How hard is it to put on a watch and go. Even if you are counting calories those counters are not accuate anyway as they don't weigh all the factors

6. Privacy-If that is what you desire when you run sure. The running communitee is a social group. You will get in better shape and make some friends if you join a club or run at a popular park

I DARE the poster to put my comments up here, but he/she wont after all this hub is spam anyway (check out the only link)

I have no fear of leaving your comments up as everyone one has their own opinion and should be able to express them that is why some run indoor and some outdoors.

After trying to get into outdoor walking (then running) and failing many times due to the issues listed above I found that once I started to workout in my own home I was able to keep with it. I am also able to run while I have dinner cooking (as I did last night) to me that a super plus.

I'm glad that you took the time to voice your opinion and hope that you continue with your running.

I really have to say Bravo to all who know which they like indoor and/or outdoor running. You are active and in the game, staying fit and healthy. Keep it up!

I personally use both methods and each one works well for me.

Great hubpage!

The mechanics of running on a treadmill are different too. Take a look at http://www.shoeguide.co.uk/exec/articles/choosing_

for details.

Andy2,

I agree with you 100%. You do need a different type of shoe for running outdoors and indoors. There are a good selection at the site you have listed.

Treadmills have definite advantages in cities where smog is a health hazard, and in more hostile climates. Using a combination of indoors and outdoors for running and distance walking for your different circumstances and seasons, and with the right shoes, makes infinite sense when you can work it out. Not everyone is crazy enough to run in the snow, as my deceased husband was! Treadmills are great for running dogs, too, since most people are challenged to run twice daily with the working breeds who really need and crave it!

I use my treadmill just to walk fast as I have a bad knee and am not able to run as I used to.

"How hard is it to put on a watch and just go?" It's very difficult, some would say impossible, when you are a stay at home mom!! Like I'd just leave my small children at home, strap on a watch, and leave the house for an hour. I don't think so. A treadmill has saved me physically. It is really hard to find time to work out with little ones. I can now put in a movie for the kids or wait until naptime and just get on the treadmill. And NO, I do not take any anti-depressants!

I started running outside years ago. Then started on a treadmill. I like outdoors better. Feels better afterwards. My hips start to hurt on the treadmill. Feels like I actually did something/worked out outdoors, less so on the treadmill.

Its just a better run outside, there is no substitute for it. Unfortunately I now weightrain and like to get up early and run then lift. It is still too dark outside to be safe on the street so I am now back on the treadmill but need to change my sched so I get back to real running which is of course outside.

Bill,

I was originally tempted to disapprove of your comment and delete. I found it to be rude and didn't add much to the discussion.

However, I want this hub to be open to different ideas and points of view.

It really doesn't matter how people workout or which methods that the prefer - the point is that they are getting out there and doing it.
