Treadmill Tips and Information.

Treadmills are pieces of workout equipment that are usually used indoors. An individual can walk or run while using this stationary machine. The word treadmill traditionally refers to a type of mill which was operated by a person or animal treading steps of a wheel to grind grain.

Most of the machines are run by electric motors and belt system. When the treadmill is switched on, the belt connected to the machine and motor rotates from top to rear which then allows the runner to run at an equal speed to the belt rotation. You can easily set and measure the speed of the run. (the pace of the belt's motion is the speed that the runner will maintain) The costlier, sturdier models are motor operated. For a less expensive treadmill that is simple and light, go with a passive version. It is not mechanized, and it is powered by the exerciser and just offers resistance to motion.

Some History On Treadmills.

Treadmills were invented in 1875. The first treadmill was a piece of equipment used for agricultural purposes, and was called a "level power" treadmill. They are made in different sizes to make room for animals of different sizes The smaller treadmills were run by dogs and sheep to power attached fanny mills or butter churners. The larger ones had been operated by horses to run threshing machines.

The Original Healthcare Treadmill.

In 1952 the earliest therapeutic system was conceived by UW cardiologist Robert Bruce, who was named the founder of excercise cardiology, together with UW staffer Wayne Quinton. The Standard Stress Test was invented to help diagnose lung and heart problems and to see the severity of those diseases. Quinton later sold his interest to Stairmaster, who was subsequently bought by Nautilus.

Tunturi Treadmill.

The Tunturi business originated in 1922 as a store that fixed bicycles. Because of their innovative W1 exercise bicycle, this company is often regarded as a pioneer in the physical fitness equipment business. As a manufacturer of exercise equipment for the fitness industry it has a reputation as one of the best in the industry and is based in Finland.

Aerobics, Inc.

In the latter part of the 1960's, Bill Staub observed that treadmills were prohibitively priced and were primarily utilized as health testing apparatus. Staub was a medical engineer, this helped him to economically construct a home treadmill. He shipped Dr. Cooper a model, and it impressed him so much that he was able to sell the initial batch of several hundred to people referred to him. In 1968, Dr. Cooper's company, Aerobics, Inc, began full scale production of PaceMaster. Since that time, they have evolved from manufacturing basic treadmills to manufacturing apparatus with computerized and automatic functions.

NASA.

The U.S. space program utilized treadmills aboard Skylab in order to maintain the astronauts' physical condition in an atmosphere of zero gravity. This first treadmill used in outer space was merely a Teflon-coated plate that allowed the feet to slide as an astronaut ran in place with bungee cord tethers.
