Microdermabrasion and Acne

Most people have been affected by acne at one time or another, especially during the teenage years. Millions and millions of dollars each year are spend on the treatment of acne, ranging from relatively inexpensive over the counter treatments to very expensive professional treatments. Recently, microdermabrasion has been found as an effective treatment to help control acne. Since this treatment can be done by a professional or at home, it has become popular, especially among teenagers and young adults.

What makes microdermabrasion such a good treatment for acne? Acne typically occurs when dirt and bacteria become trapped under the surface of the skin due to blocked pores. Microdermabrasion works by removing the very top layer of skin which consists of dead skin cells. When these cells are removed, it allows the skin to breath. The exfoliating ingredient used in most microdermabrasion is aluminum oxide crystals which kills some of the bacteria that causes acne.

Microdermabrasion can be done in a dermatologist office, in a spa or at home. Visits to a professional can cost between $150 - $200 per visit. Microdermabrasion at home can be done for under $10 per treatment. The advantage of professional microdermabrasion is that the exfoliation is deeper, due the machines that are used. You would probably have to do at least 3 or 4 treatments using microdermabrasion at home to see similar results.

Although microdermabrasion is one of the safest treatments on the market for acne, you must be aware of the risk and side effects. Since microdermabrasion is non invasive, the side effects are mild and temporary. The most common complaint is soreness and redness. This is expected since microdermabrasion works by exfoliating the top layer of skin. Generally, applying a moisturizer will sooth and replenish the skin. Also, you must avoid direct sunlight immediately after your treatment. A common mistake that people make when using microdermabrasion at home is overuse. Make sure that you follow the directions and not be over anxious to see results. Many people have been tempted to use these home products everyday. You must allow your skin time to heal.

Also, make sure that you are realistic in your expectations. Microdermabrasion will not prevent you from ever having a breakout again. It will not remove every scar. In some cases, it may make your acne worse. Make sure that you follow the directions and see your dermatologist if a problem occurs.
