Diabetes is an increasing problem in the United States and other countries. One of the leading factors is thought to be increases in obesity, as there have been a number of direct links found between those with Type II Diabetes and are overweight.

Even though there are actually several different kinds of diabetes, including both Insulin Dependent Diabetes and Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes, they often share a number of similarities in regards to their symptoms and effects. One similarity is that they both affect blood sugar levels.

Diabetes and Insulin

In the body, blood sugar is used as a chief source of energy. Blood sugar, or glucose as it is usually referred to in medical circles, is normally controlled by a hormone called insulin. The body uses insulin to break the glucose down back into energy.

In someone who is diabetic, the insulin stops doing its job. Usually because there is not enough insulin or because the body has become insulin resistant. As a result, the blood sugar levels go un-regulated. This can cause glucose levels to become dangerously high or dangerously low, as well as causing a number of other health problems. As a result of the dangers associated with a glucose level that is too high or too low, it is very important for those with diabetes to regularly check their glucose level. This process is referred to blood sugar monitoring or glucose monitoring.

How often blood sugar is monitored depends on several factors, including the type of diabetes. For example, someone with Type I Diabetes will need to check their blood sugar levels much more frequently than someone with Type II Diabetes.

Effects of Exercise on Glucose Levels

The types of activities that the person is preforming can also be a factor in how often blood sugar should be checked. This is because exercise actually lowers blood sugar levels naturally, which is why exercise is usually a prescribed part of a diabetes treatment plan. However, it is important to check ones blood sugar level before and after exercise. If the blood sugar levels are too low before exercise, it is important take action before preforming exercise.

Effects of Food on Glucose Levels

Eating certain types of foods, especially those high in sugar, can also be dangerous, so a healthy diabetic diet is important. Monitoring glucose levels after eating may be necessary, especially when the person is still getting used to their diabetes.

How Blood Sugar Levels are Checked

To monitor blood sugar levels, most people use a simple hand held glucose monitor. These devices are sometimes call blood sugar meters or blood glucose monitors, and feature a digital readout of the blood sugar levels. They check a small drop of blood, so it is necessary to prick a finger or other area on the body, however first ensure that this area has been properly cleaned.

It is also possible to check samples of urine for glucose levels, but this is not as accurate, nor does it provide a real time analysis of glucose levels.

If after checking blood sugar levels, the person finds they have low blood sugar or high blood sugar, it is necessary to take action. Speak with a doctor to determine what to do in your situation, but this often involves taking an insulin shot or eating a small piece of candy.

With careful attention to blood glucose levels, a proper diet, and regular exercise, it is usually possible to safely control diabetes.
