Home Remedy for Ear Mites / Infections

For home remedy, try any of the following treatments out, checking with your vet for approval first to be sure what you are dealing with. Then follow up for preventative treatment.

With either treatment, strive to clean ears thoroughly first, rinsing debris away from ear canal so it doesn't get lodged inside. Then place a couple drops in the ears for up to two weeks.

A) Mix 1/3 part tea tree oil solution with 2/3 parts olive oil or other non-toxic light oil. Dab in ears with cotton or Q-tips, gently cleaning away grime and mites' ooze.

B) Mix a solution of 0.5% chlorhexidine solution or 10% povidone-iodine solution with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Cleaning ears gently with cotton balls wet with this solution and / or q-tips.

To help prevent the ears form being infected again, here is a solution to use, once you have it cleared up first like with a treatment from above.

4 oz of Rubbing Alcohol

2 Tablespoons of Boric Acid

1 Tablespoon of Glycerine

Ask for the above ingredients from a local drug store or pharmacy. Mix them together, then place a small amount into each ear once a week, squeezing it from a damp cloth into the ear or using an eyedropper. You'll want to gently rub it inside the area, and then have your dog shake his head. (It will do this on its own, don't worry).

You should NOT use boric acid!!! I believe you meant BORAX - there is a difference!

Boric acid is commonly used as a home remedy for killing ear mites. Borax can also be used, usually in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide.
