Trouble Falling Asleep

Sleeping is one of the most natural human functions so it is strange that we sometimes we suffer from insomnia and have trouble falling asleep. We can make ourselves go without food and resist drinking water but when sleep overcomes us we just drift into sleep without even being aware of it when we are really tired. Yet, for all that we sometimes cannot sleep even when we feel tired and we desperately want to go to sleep. Why is that?

The answer often seems to lie in our state of mind. Our minds are powerful and when you are worrying about some problem in life it can be very difficult to allow yourself to relax and relaxing seems to be the essential feature when you want to fall asleep.

Problems Sleeping

Most people sleep without difficulty, most of the time, but we all suffer periods of sleeplessness now and again. For some people insomnia and lack of proper sleep is a constant problem and throughout their lives they are unsure if they will get a decent nights sleep every time they go to bed.

It is probably true to say that for most of us our difficulty sleeping is caused by worries and stress from our daily lives. It is difficult to relax and fall asleep when your mind is active and worrying about problems with your work, worries about your financial situation and concerns about family and relationships.

How To Relax

The secret to getting a good nights sleep seems to be all about relaxing so how can you help your mind and body relax when you just want to get some sleep? There are some helpful general tips to help you sleep and they are always worth trying as they may work well for you.

You should avoid dealing with anything that will tax your brain in the hour or so before bedtime. If you are doing some paperwork in the evening make a point of putting it aside about an hour before you go to bed and make a conscious decision not to think about it anymore until the following day.

A warm relaxing bath before bedtime may help your whole body to relax and if you follow this with a warm milky drink it can help you get in the right state of mind for sleep. You might like to take your warm drink with you to bed and some people enjoy reading in bed for a while until they feel sleepy.

Reading does not work for everyone and your choice of reading matter may make a difference to how well you relax. It is best to avoid reading anything that stimulates your mind since the whole purpose is aimed at relaxing your mind to help you sleep.
