Windows Server 2003 is a popular server operating system. When you turn on a Windows Server 2003 based server, it undertakes four phases of booting, which include Initial phase, Boot loader phase, Kernel phase and Logon phase. If your system suffers any problem while these phases, it reports errors or shows abrupt behavior. Your data becomes inaccessible and to retrieve it, you need to use your recent data backup. But, if you find that data backup can’t restore the information you require or is completely unavailable, you need to use data recovery softwareto reclaim your data post data loss.

As a practical instance, when you turn on your Windows Server 2003 based server system, it may fail to start correctly. You encounter an error message or your computer system hangs. All such problems are summed up as bootup or startup problems (as per the case) in Windows Server 2003.

Cause

Windows Server 2003 system suffers startup issues if one of the boot phases doesn’t get completed. It can occur due to these reasons:

  • Lost/damaged Windows file(s)
  • Incompatible driver, programs or services
  • Hardware damage
  • Hard disk crash
  • File system damage
  • Incorrect hardware settings
  • Registry damage

Solution

To solve Windows Server 2003 startup issues, you need to follow the below steps in sequence:

  • You can try starting your system using Last Known Good Configuration option. It allows your server to start with the settings that worked last time to boot it correctly.
  • Next, you can start your computer in Safe Mode. This starts the system with minimal set of drivers and computer services. Hence, you can use Event Viewer, Safe Mode Log file, and System Information to recognize and correct the problem.
  • If the problem persists, you need to use System Configuration Utility (Start > Run > msconfig) to automate routine troubleshooting steps.
  • You can then use Windows Recovery Console to perform tasks such as fixing and creating MBR (Master Boot Record), accessing drives, copying missing or lost files etc. You might require reinstalling the operating system. If Windows corruption is the issue, repair or reinstall Windows.
  • Use chkdsk utility to diagnose hard disk or file system damage. If chkdsk can’t access your hard disk, it might be due to software or hardware issues. You need to consult data recovery experts to recover the lost data. If it can’t access the hard disk, the hard disk file system or MBR might be damaged. You require using suitable Recovery Console commands or repartition the hard disk. Use your recent data backup to restore the lost data or a quality data recovery tools, if you face issues related to backup.
