Truck Driving Jobs and Empty Promises

The "Best" Truck Driving Job

Driving down the highway going 63 MPH and watching the clock, making sure that your load gets delivered on time. You back up to the dock to unload and you have a half hour to spare. You didn't think you could do it, but steady driving, just enough time to keep legal logs, and plenty of coffee allowed it all to happen. Dispatch calls and now you get to do it all over again, only this time you run 200 miles and have to wait 24 hours to get loaded. The good time you made on the last load, the sacrifice to make sure it was all done "perfectly", is now erased by a 200 mile day @ 38CPM. If you're lucky, you may have an 1800 mile week......at best.

This is a typical scenario of a truck driver. Not only that, but it is a typical scenario of a trucking company.....specifically, one which  promised you 2500 miles per week. When you look through your records you discover you had one 2500 mile week, but most were all just shy of 2000 miles.

This was the company you signed on with, the one that the recruiter told you that you would receive 2500 miles per week...the job, he said,  would be "the best truck driving job."

Disappointed and Disillusioned

You wonder, "what happened?"  You believed everything that was told to you, all the promises...after all, why would they lie? Everyone in the company assured you that you would get the miles and you would be "OK".  Layovers were just a "once in awhile" occurrence, but to you, they seem to be a weekly event.

So you decide to start looking again. You get on the forums, ask around, and lo and behold, there it is, "the best truck driving job."

You then give your notice and move on to your new trucking job. This one is "the one". This is the company that will do what it says it will. This is the job you've been waiting for......until....so you keep looking.

The 128% Driver Turn Over Rate

The above example is just one of many typical trucking scenerios. Another typical scenario is the promise of "home every weekend", only to find out that every weekend means 1 weekend per month with 2 to 3 weekend layovers....with no pay.

There are many other deceptions which take place within the trucking industry. Some subtle, some not so subtle, but they all contribute to the incredible 128% truck driver turn over rate which exists today. Drivers go from job to job always having hope to find " the best truck driving job."

Raising the Standards of the Trucking Industry

For years, I watched truck drivers experience these same situations as I've described. I myself was a victim a few times, but as the years rolled on I wised up as so many veterans do. It did continue to bother me quite a bit, listening to others describe the stories that I had so bitterly experienced from years before.

To make things worse, the trucking companies were now opening CDL training facilities and charging an exorbitant amount of money for an inadequate 3 week training course.  ( CDL Mills)

In the year 2000 I wrote the "Truth About Trucking" in the hope to expose the trucking industry scams and to alert students and new drivers of the deception and lies that takes place. Most veteran drivers had to learn the "hard way", but a new driver could actually avoid these scams and be way ahead of the game. I believed that if enough people joined forces and were equipped with the knowledge of what really goes on in the trucking industry, the standards of the trucking industry would change....for the better.

Helping Drivers Find "Good" Companies

In an effort to help drivers find "good" trucking companies, I did come up with the top 5 companies. Based on the emails I was receiving, I felt though, that this was too limited of a list, so I decided to do some research and determine what the best companies would be according to each drivers home destination. Instead of limiting the search, which would include just the "giant" companies, I looked into moderately sized companies as well. I investigated a state by state project, and frankly, when it was complete I was anxious to share it with as many people as possible.

The results speak for themselves and it is my desire that this in-depth research will help truck drivers, by leading them to some of the best, most ethical companies to work for within the industry.

There really is a list of the " Best Truck Driving Jobs."

You sure have brought back a few memories.

Worse memory of driving a truck was unloading a timber Truck in the snow at 5.00 am in the morning.

Hated that job. Went and drove a Trolley bus in the same snow Horrible

Truckers go through quite a lot that the general public doesn't have a clue about. Many people get into trucking not realizing the lifestyle or the sacrifices involved. Turns into a nightmare for them. Others love it and wouldn't want to do anything else.

I love truck driving and the information you have is definitely a great way to bring many opinions of the millions of drivers out there into a single place. I know we at the Kosher Foods appreciate your work! Thanks!

Great to see you telling it how it is. Most driving jobs are like this. Good for new drivers to not get disappointed and believing the advertisements.
