First Edition Harry Potter Books

With the amazing success of the Harry Potter series of books and movies 1st edition Harry Potter books are becoming increasingly collectable these days and are liable to fetch a pretty penny at auction. A true 1st edition Harry Potter books is one that was printed during the first print run of the first edition, rather than just a first edition version of the Harry Potter book itself. Subsequent printings of a first edition Harry Potter book are less valuable than a first print run version.

As you are no doubt aware Harry Potter is the seven book series of fantasy novels written by British author J.K.Rowling, the Harry Potter fantasy novels tell the story of an adolescent wizard named Harry Potter and his adventures with the likes of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger to name but a few. Usually set in or around the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft the books and movies from the series chronicle Harry Potter’s battle against the evil wizard Lord Voldemort.

The first novel released in the Harry Potter series of books was ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ in 1997. At the time of writing the Harry Potter series of books has sold more than 400 million copies and has been translated into 67 languages. The Harry Potter brand is thought to be worth over seven billions pounds.

How to Spot a True First Edition Harry Potter Book

In order for a Harry Potter book to be a true first edition Harry Potter book it must be both labelled ‘first edition’ and have been pressed during the first print run. In order to spot a true first edition Harry Potter book it is necessary to check the print number that appears on the Copyright page within the book, the print number will look something along the lines of ’10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1”, if that print number stops before it reaches the number one then chances are you are not holding a true first edition Harry Potter, but should that print run number run all the way down to ‘1’ then there is a good chance that you have found yourself a true first edition Harry Potter Book.

How to Spot a True First Edition Harry Potter Book

In addition to the above to be sure that you have found a true first edition Harry Potter book you will need to check that the price is printed on the inside of the cover and also that the ISBN number is printed on the back of the jacket as both of these marks are displayed upon a true Harry Potter first edition.

Numerous first edition Harry Potter books are available for purchase on eBay and at the time of writing some of the highlights include a signed Hard back 1st Edition copy of Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets on a bookplate by the publisher Bloomsbury books, a signed true first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and a true first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Astonishing how quickly books can become valuable. I'd no idea that Harry Potter was already fetching this kind of money. I'll have to check my copies!

Hey Amanda, yep definitly worth a look if your not overly attached to them, some of the Harry Potter first editions (especially signed copies) are going on eBay for thousands.

To be honset, neither am I lol, probably shouldn't be admitting to that on a Harry Potter Hub, but I am a fan of rare books, well books in general really.  I've heard of that Barry Trotter but never read any, that would probably be more my cup of tea though, reminds me of a book I read a while back that was a spoof of the Matrix, but I forget what it was called, quite funny though.

Excellent hub MrV. The most valuable first editions are signed ones but unfortunately it is very easy to fake a signature. If people are looking for the 'next Harry Potter. then it might be worth taking a look at Magyk by Angie Sage -it's another series of Magic for kids and Warner Bros. has signed up the film rights to replace the Harry Potter franchise when that comes to an end.

If only we all had the 20-20 hindsight of knowing what would be a hit and what wouldn't...when you think of all the new books published year and year that fall into oblivion, and how very few become remarkable house-hold names, the odds are certainly against us guessing or even predicting. One thing is certain, I think, that trends do not repeat themselves in the sense of 'well Harry Potter was a magical boy in England so the next big thing will be another magical kid somewhere'....not likely. The next big thing will be something nobody has any clue about right now, because trends are created by a multitude of factors, most of which are unknown to us, but might include things like political event, economic elements in society,the weather and even for all we know, sunspots !

It is fun to guess though. :)

No idea that my books could be worth so much. Just looked and I have the UK first editions of three of the books, which are now worth a lot more than what I paid for them!
