Turmeric --which is also called 'Golden Spice'--is considered auspicious in India. Having both anti- oxidant and anti inflammatory properties, turmeric powder is used as a diuretic, blood purifier and intestinal stimulant. Diet-based turmeric is used to reduce  stomach problems, allergies, diarrhea, heartburn, wind, bloating, colic, flatulence and liver ailments.  Curcumin, the major yellow constituent of the turmeric powder, reduces the inflammation of the bowel. This discovery may give way for diet-based treatments for people suffering from the genetic form of Crohn's disease.

Christine Butts of Plant & Food Research said that the Crohn's disease is a form of inflammation in the bowel, which can be aggravated or relieved by the sufferer's diet. Ms. Christine Butt also said that they are one step close to understanding this disease and how to control it in a best way through diet-based treatment by using Turmeric.

Some people with Crohn's disease may benefit from eating turmeric, but this is entirely dependent on their genetic makeup.  Others may not get any benefit, or may even have a severe reaction.  In diseases with complex genetics, such as Crohn's disease, understanding which genetic variants are affected by which food compounds is very very important  for knowing what kind of diet to be avoided.

The primary aim is to develop gene specific foods targeted to preventing, improving and curing diseases, said an Aucland University release.  The results of the study were published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

If you want to increase your curcumin intake in the meantime, it can’t hurt to try some new turmeric-rich recipes. Turmeric, whether used as fresh root or as dry powder, contains 5 percent curcumin. Studies have shown that turmeric from Curcuma Longa plants in Southeast Asia contain more curcumin than turmeric found in the plants of East Asia.
