Seven Key Steps To Overcoming Information Overload

Break through to the power that can be gained by mastering time and money and to get them working for you…not the other way around!

  1. Pick a day where you know that you are going to be not only busy (aren't they all?), but also a day where you know you will be covering a majority (if not all) of the tasks that you normally ever have to carry out.
  2. The next step is vital. As you go through the day write down all of the tasks you complete and the time taken to complete them.
  3. Split the tasks up into basic generic groupings. So, for example, all copywriting put in a copywriting list, all emails put in an emails list (you must break down tasks into their most basic actions, for example, writing email, writing letters, making ‘phone calls, writing copy etc).
  4. Next, work out how much of your day was spent in each generic task group.
  5. This is a really key part! Now, split your normal day into "micro days" the length of which should based on the amount of time you need to complete each function daily.
  6. Make sure you enter every "to do" task in the relevant "micro day".
  7. And, finally, if you don't complete everything in any "micro day" the left over items are held over until tomorrow’s “micro day”. Put more urgent items at the top of each micro day.

The speed of life these days seems to just get faster and faster

Tempus Fugit (time flies) is, I believe the phrase that is applied! I’m not sure if it’s just the fact that as I get older each second I have left is a rapidly diminishing percentage of the time I do have left, or that it’s simply (do you like the play on words there?) the complexity of "modern life".

But, whatever the case it seems that less and less get's done! Information overload seems to be prevalent and that inevitably leads to paralysis or analysis (where you have so much to do you don’t know where to start and end up doing nothing).

When I first started Internet Marketing three years ago the learning curve was incredible. I got caught by the so-called "Guru's" who will sell you a $37 eBook that will “reveal all of the inner secrets” and have you earning $127,847 a month with no effort at all...but if we are honest you and I both know this just doesn’t happen.

My take on this is that Internet Marketing is the same as any “proper” business and there is a skillset to be learned and mastered. Once you have done that, then yes, you can make money online and good money at that. But too many people sell Internet Marketing as the dreaded “get rich quick scheme” and too many people buy it as the same…and then wonder why they end up disappointed!

And, now we are very much in choppy economic waters, I am now totally convinced that moving your business online is the answer. The London Telegraph reported in March 2009, buried away in a corner amongst all the doom and gloom, that sales over the Internet in 2008 grew some 30%. What further proof do you need?

So, in accepting that Internet Marketing is a proper, bona fide business model, you have to learn how all the various facets of the business work. And there are many different techniques and tools that need to be learnt, in some detail, before you can start generating the success you are looking for.

So, when, in 2006, I made "my big decision" online was where I was going, how did I manage to "inwardly digest" all of the information I needed?

One thing is for sure, when I first started to look at the “scope” of the problem, I hit the Information Overload wall very quickly. And, I probably spent about three months suffering acute paralysis of analysis, so I know what I am talking about here!

One interesting variation that has worked well is to complete day's most important task first and not to do anything else until that is complete. This also works well and is promoted by Tim Ferriss in the 4 hour work week (which is a great book).

However, one thing that I have found to be really key is this! Don't make checking your email your first job of the day. It’s a time sink that job! You must be disciplined and make sure that you only deal with email in the correct "micro day" otherwise it can consume your entire day before you know it!

I developed this system when I first went online. My recruitment business had crashed and I was under extreme financial pressure. It was amazing how gaining total control over my time and money allowed me to turn around a rapidly failing life in just a few short months.

To learn more about the Total Control system ive added some extracts of my book below......

A Brief Peek Into TOTAL CONTROL

The one thing that seems to be prevalent in today’s high-powered, fast-paced world is stress. However, as pressured as you may feel, you really don’t need a day off or a holiday (nice as they are).

The amount of information that flies around and needs to be assimilated is totally overwhelming for a start.

However, what you need is TOTAL CONTROL rather than holidays, relaxation or a trip to the shrink.

If you can gain genuine control over every aspect of your business (and possibly personal) life you will no longer feel the pressure. You will feel happiness and a complete release of stress as you start to complete incredible amounts of work and generate amazing success.
No matter what anyone says, achieve that control, over everything, and you will become a very powerful individual in whatever field you choose.

TOTAL CONTROL is not some namby-pamby, fuzzy inspirational book. It is a laser like practical quick-action guide that has the ability to deliver rapid riches and power – to you – right now.

By the time you’ve got half way through this eBook, you will have gained more practical, honest advice and values than you have probably ever experienced before. Once completed, you will be well on the way to achieving everything you could have imagined through being in TOTAL CONTROL.

Shattering the Money Illusion

For many thousands of years, from the ancient civilisations, through the Roman Empire to the modern Global Economy, the masses have sought to understand how the few individuals that hold the money and power really do what they do.

Look at the attention lavished on the likes of Richard Branson, George Sorros or Roman Abramovich. The more powerful the individual the more attention they seem to attract. And…why is it that whatever Mr Branson turns his hand to, he seems to succeed at? Up until now, a reliable method for understanding all this wealth and the power has never been available – I wonder why?

The truth is the people who know these secrets guard them somewhat jealously! No surprise there.

However, you can unlock the first of the many doors by using a couple of very powerful metaphors.

1. To truly understand the world around us requires knowledge of the smallest atomic units, and…

2. To truly understand the cosmos requires an understanding of its origins.
Now, if we apply that to money, the metaphor is complete and we have….

1. Understanding the wealth that is (all) around us requires knowledge of the smallest money making units

2. Understanding the wealth and power that is around us requires knowing its absolute origins.

OK, that may all sound a bit trite but…bear with me here, as this is relevant.
The understanding begins with shrinking money, and power, way, way below the levels of the huge corporations such as those banks and oil companies that I contributed to in my formative years. You see, I sat there at the till cashing cheques and taking in payments, but…I had no idea how that contributed to the bank’s overall profits. I just couldn’t see the
big picture from where I was sitting. In fact, I couldn’t possibly see all the cogs and how they interacted from that isolated position.
Basic Money Making

So, for the time being, we have to leave the plush head office buildings and skyscrapers and look at the very smallest, most basic money making “transactions”. We need to go even lower than the factory assembly lines, we need to go right back to the very building blocks of all finance, if you like.

If you look at the street trader, it’s here that you can see money making at its most fundamental. It’s like looking through a microscope and seeing a scaled down version of the big corporation. This is the smallest possible example of money producing, the one-man, one-cart business.

For example:

• The burger van outside of the football ground,
• The scarf and badge seller.
• The one-woman cream fudge maker who sells her wares on the craft fair circuit,
indeed any trader on the craft fair circuit.
• The market trader.

It is from these humble beginnings that the first entrepreneurial atom emerges. It is here that we can gain the understanding of the very core of money making that we need. This is the definite essence of money and power and…it is absolutely indisputable!

The same principles hold true whether you are the local burger cart seller or Virgin Atlantic. From the very streets, right up to Richard Branson’s office, the same principles apply.
