Turning 21: A milestone?
79I promise my 21st won't be like this
So it's my birthday tomorrow. I haven't been a big birthday person for a few years now because it really feels like any other day; in my family, it's a sort of rule that you don't have to buy the kids presents when they turn 18. I guess the big deal about this birthday is that it's No. 21.
I think my friends are more excited than I am about this one. I'm one of the last of my group to reach 21, and they've been waiting for me to go to the bars, or out dancing to some "good" clubs. I don't feel like I've missed out on too much based on my age, other than renting a car, but from the way they talk, you would think I was born a few years too late.
I haven't been a teenager for a year now, and turning 20 was no big deal at all. As some people say, it was just another day. This time, however, it does seem like things will be different, and not just because 21 is the U.S. legal drinking age. I think it's related to the idea that people will think of me differently now that I'm the "big" 2-1.
I'm not in college anymore; I'm living on my own and making my own money. I have my first job after graduating and I'm ready to learn what I can about the "real world."
However, I am going to be of drinking age. I admit that I still consider 21 a very immature age. I am very curious about what people think of 21-year-olds in any context, and what their own experiences were in turning 21.
I hope people will comment on this Hub and reply to the questions posed: What do you think of 21-year-olds? What was it like when you turned 21?
Maybe your thoughts will help me get a better grip on this age. I want to be the best I can this year, but it will help to know what I am up against.
Also, if you're not quite 21 yet, please look at the last 2 links I included below. They're things you should do before you're 21. I've done almost all of them, and I have to say, my life seems pretty complete at this point.

Thank you :)
A day late but still can wish you a Happy 21st Birthday. Hope it was fun!
A wee bit late myself, but I too hope you had a very happy day...birthday or not.
I still wonder what it is about 21. It was a big deal when *I* turned 21, and there really wasn't anything to be gained from it -- the legal drinking age at the time being 18. Maybe it's a legacy thing. For much of U.S. history, you couldn't vote until you were 21, and thus 21 became a sort of magic number.
Me...I like the prime-number birthdays, myself. No reason. Just like 'em.

My thoughts on being 21? I just reached that monumental birthday myself four days ago.
Frankly, I agree with you and don't think I've missed out on much either and since I don't drink there was no great freedom handed to me on that day.
However I do think the big difference is the way some other people view me--not my closest friends and family, but coworkers and professors and administrators at my college. I've gotten the impression thatbturning 21 means that I am now a full-fledged adult and they will expect me to act like one (although everyone tells me I've been acting like I was 25 for the last 5 years).
For what they're worth, those are my thoughts on turning 21....
Thanks for your thoughts, you guys! I think turning 21 and all that comes with it is a self-fulfilling prophecy these days... I wonder how it would be different if the legal drinking age was still 18? :)
This is really late--but happy B day.
this 21 b-day all about the legal drinking age. i just turned 21 a week ago, and i got soo drunk to where i didnt remeber it. =(
happy 21st brithday is a day where i think the most pleasent expirence was to go to that bar and flag my id in the bouncers face. or so i imagined. THEY DIDNT EVEN CHECK IT! my confindence and body language just showed to the bouncers that i was of legal age.
i highly recommend you should celebrate your 21st birthday not of a day for liberating freedom (be honestly, you got drunk before 21), instead celebrate it as the cornerstone of where your life began and that you made it thru 21 years (since unfortunantly there were people that didnt live to that age), and to 21 more years to come.. ill drink to THAT!
happy birthday!!!
I just turned 21 today. I don't feel any different! But I'm not going out and partying. I am just going to lunch with friends and dinner with the family. I don't need to drink to be 21.
Thanks everyone!
Lauri, I'll drink to that! :) lol

Many Happy Returns of the Day. Keep your cool and enjoy it for there is only one 21, and you will not get another day like it. Think what you wish to remember when you are 42 what you have accomplished on that day. Adios!
