Twenty Easy Terms for Bloggers
For a newbie, blogging terms and acronyms can almost seem like a learning a foreign language. Although some bloggers write purely for the enjoyment of writing and sharing it, many bloggers would like to make money off their blogs too. Learning to make money on a blog has a big learning curve. Hopefully, some of these terms will help you understand the language of blogging better.
1. What is a blog?
Blog is a shortened word for web log. It is a website that lists regularly updated content in a reverse chronological order. Some examples of blog media are personal diaries, photographs, informational articles, news, and recipes.
2. What is monetizing your blog?
When you monetize your blog, you can make money with the blog by either becoming an affiliate or programs like Google adsense. .
3. What is traffic?
Traffic is the number of visitors a website receives. It is the lifeblood of a blog. If a blog is monetized, it can make or break or a blog. The more traffic you receive, the more likelihood there is that people will click on the advertisements or buy the product.
4. What is a niche?
A niche blog covers a focused, specialized topic rather than a broad array of topics. For example, a blog exclusively limited to digital photography would be considered a niche blog.
5. What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is an internet business which offers a percentage of money when viewers click on the ad and purchase the product.
6. What is Adsense?
Adsense is a contextual advertising program run by Google. Contextual advertising is where the advertising on a website is directly related to the website’s content. Google displays contextual advertisements and when viewers click on the ads they pay a variable amount of money.
7. What is a page impression?
A page impression is the number of times a website page has been accessed by a viewer.
8. What does CTR stand for?
CTR stands for click through rate. The click through rate is the number of clicks advertisements recieve per the number of impressions. For example, if you had 100 impressions and one ad was clicked, the ctr would be 1%.
9. What does eCPM stand for?
On ad sense it means effective cost per thousand impression. It is an estimate of how much money you would earn after 1000 impresssions.
10. What is page rank?
Page rank represents how important a website is to a search engine. With Google, it is dependent upon factors such as a website’s relevance, content quality, and links among other things. If you have a good page rank, your website will show up on the first page of search engine results. Page rank is important because it affects the amount of traffic your blog will receive.
11. What is a back link?
A back link is when one website links back to another website. A website usually back links to another website when the other website is relevant or can add some type of value to their own website. Back links and traffic goes hand in hand. Back links are one of the most important factors in receiving a higher page rank. If a website links back to your website, Google views the website as having more authority. More authority means a better page rank, especially if the website linking back to the other website has a good page rank. The higher page rank a website receives, the sooner a website comes up in the searches. Since people brousing the web usually hit on the first few search engine listing, the more traffic a website receives.
12. What does SERP mean?
SERP means search engine result page. It is the search engine listings after performing a search engine query.
13.What is a no-follow link?
A no-follow link is an html attribute that is used so a search engine will not follow a link.
14. What does SEO stand for?
SEO stands for search engine optimization. When a website wants to receive a higher page rank and more traffic, they optimize the website with various techniques. Some of these techniques include:
- Writing quality content
- Writing url, title, and content with the appropriate keyword density
- Link building
- Listing on social bookmarks
15. What is an RSS feed?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It updates dynamic content and sends the new content to subscribers.
16. What is a social bookmark?
A social bookmark is a website that stores your favorite webpages. It also allows the users to share their bookmarks.
17. What is a blogroll?
A blog roll is a list of your favorite bloggers that is linked to your website and usually placed in a sidebar. Since there is a possibility that the bloggers on your blog roll will link back to you, it can increase your blog’s exposure and traffic.
18. What is a track back?
A track back is a ping that notifies a blogger when his or her blog has been metioned by someone else.
19. What is a blog plug-in?
A plug-in is a piece of software that adds functionality to a blog.
20. What is a spider?
A spider is a program that search engines use to find and index information on the internet.

If you're reading this article, I imagine you're new to blogging. Are you blogging for pleasure or do you envision making big profits with your blog? If you're blogging for pleasure, you might want to consider trying to make money with your blog too. Blogging is a great opportunity to work from the comfort of your own home doing something love. People can and do make thousands and thousands of dollars from their blogs everyday. However, it not only takes hard work, but it takes knowledge too, and the learning curve is steep.
Having a successful blog is not as simple as posting blogs to a website. You can be the world's best writer, but if you don't know how to promote your blog, no one is going to see it. Consequently, if no one sees it, you won't make any money. Furthermore, although there are plenty of bloggers writing blogs about how to make money with your blog, very few will share all their secrets on how to be successful.
