These two fun and simple games are ideal for the beach and can be enjoyed by children and adults. They are quick to learn and need the minimum of equipment. So go have some fun!

Game two: Cap chase

You will need: An odd number of players and a baseball cap

How to play:

1. Mark four lines the same length in the sand parallel to one another. The middle two should be 6 feet (approx 2m) apart. Then the two outer lines 9 feet (approx 3m) out from the first.
2. Split the players into even teams, with one team standing on one of the inner lines and the other on the line opposite.
3. The odd player stands between the two inner lines but at one end holding the baseball cap.
4. Choose which team will be the ‘down’ team so the other is the ‘up’ team.
5. The player with the cap throws it into the air.
6. If the cap lands right side up then the ‘up’ team runs to the line behind them chased by the ‘down’ team.
7. If the cap lands up-side down then the ‘down’ team runs to the line behind them chased by the ‘up’ team.
8. If during the chase a team member is ‘tagged’ by a player from the other team then the player tagged has to join the other team.
9. At the end of each go all players return to the middle lines ready for the cap to be thrown again.
10. Play continues until one of the teams has no players left, in this way everyone is part of the winning team!

Game two: King of the castle

You will need: 3 or more players and a bucket, spade and a bottle of water per player

How to play:

1. Mark two parallel lines in the sand around 9 feet (approx 3m) apart.
2. On one line place the buckets, spades and bottles of water and the players stand on the other line.
3. Shout GO!
4. Each player then has to run and collect one item. Return to the start line, place the item on the fground and return again until they have collected all items.
5. They then have to make a sand castle as quickly as they can.
6. In order to win the game the player has to make a castle that does not fall apart when the bucket is removed.

Note: If you do not have bottle of water then use the sea and part of the game is to collect water from it.
