Trouble brewing - Perry vs Lee Round 1

Do You Have A Problem With Tyler Perry Characters?

There's trouble brewing in the waters.  Do you have a problem with Tyler Perry's characters?  Maybe you don't, but apparently Spike Lee does.  Spike Lee is reported to have called many of Tyler Perry's characters, such as Madea, Mr Brown, and Joe Coons.  Spike Lee goes on to say that Tyler Perry movies all filled with Coonery.

What do you think?  Do you think the character, Madea takes African Americans back 50 years or do you agree with Tyler Perry; who says, Madea is a vehicle to introduce God, Love, and other positive messages.

Tyler Perry Live Respond To Spike Lee

I'm Going On The Record

I'm going on the record -- I love Tyler Perry work.   Yes, Madea is a blast from the past, but I know a few Madea (Alive and Well).  I also know some Joe(s) too.  However, when I'm watching a Tyler Perry picture I'm not focus on the stereotypes -- I'm into the whole plot.  Many Tyler Perry movies -- dare I say all -- have very positive messages.  Isn't that more important.

I'm tried of watch straight trash.  Tyler Perry is the alternative to some of the garage on TV and on the screen.

However, I do like Spike Lee as well.  I remember, Spike Lee movie "Fight the Power".  There was racial talk about that too.  My final word on this dispute is that "EVERY ONE HAS AN OPINION, and an *&% Too".

Tyler -- Please keep doing what you do!

Being a male, it should come as no surprise that I am no big fan of Tyler Perry productions (as the audiences of his movies and plays tend to be overwhelmingly black and female). I've actually watched a few of Perry's movies, suspending any preconceived notions, judgments, and criticisms. I find his writing to be too predictable, too cliched, and to be perfectly honest, most men can't identify (or maybe we just don't see the need to since his protagonists always tend to be women) with the characters. Yes, we know some people like his characters, but we simply can't identify with them, which is why you don't see us in his audiences (unless we are dragged there kicking and screaming by women dying to see them).

Lee, on the other has had much critical acclaim with his movies, including Academy Award nominations; that's an accolade I don't see Perry receiving from his Hollywood peers any time too soon. The characters in his movies tend not to be of the one-dimensional types that are found throughout Perry's movies. And Lee's movies display a variety of craft, tending to involve people from different backgrounds, tending to act based on different motivations. And finally, Lee's movies tend to exemplify an ability to work within different genres; versatility is the mark of a true artist. And on a more personal note, men in drag just aren't funny to me (and no, this isn't "hating." It's simply observation).

I love the work of Tyler Perry and the way he is always giving back to the community. Unlike the previous gentleman stated, there is also a message for men in the work that he does. Some are just too blind to acknowledge it. As far as his versatility, he is doing what he wants to do, having fun, sending positive messages, and an overall great job by appealing to people of many races. I don't see Spike Lee doing any of this. Personally, I think there is a bit of jealousy and envy going on here. I too have seen a few of the Spike Lee productions. However, I haven't ever known him to become a household name or even send any of the positive messages through his work that Tyler does. Look beyond the messenger, and focus on the message. Don't hate. Tyler in the event you are reading these post, keep doing what you are doing.
