Although I am not diabetic, my fiance is; so I thought I would give a third person view on how he cares for himself. First of all, he is type 2 pre-diabetic and manages his diabetes with diet, exercise, and oral medications. Fortunately, his diabetics was discovered early before he had the usual symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst etc.

Diet

Because of the amount of glucose released by foods like potatoes, rice and bread, my fiance tries to stay away from them or eat in moderation. In addition, he tries to stay away from all type of sugar based drinks including alcohol and soft drinks. For breakfast, he likes to drink skim milk and eat a banana; for lunch and/or dinner usually it is some lean beef or chicken and a serving of vegetables, and maybe some whole wheat bread. As for drinks, he likes to drink tea sweetened with sweet and low.

Snacks

As for snacks and desserts, his favorites are raw broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. Far as nuts, he prefers sunflower seeds.  For fruits, his preferance is strawberries and apple slices. Every now and then he will eat some watermelon and/or grapes but is careful because of the sugar content found in fruits.

Exercise

Since we have a dog, he usually walks the dog one mile 2 to 3 times a day

Medications, Dietary Supplements, and glucose checks

The medication prescribed by his doctor is Glyburide 2.5 mg 2 times a day, and he checks his blood sugar at least 2 times a day. He is not over weight, and as a supplement chromium picolinate is taken to help stabilize his glucose. In addition, my fiance takes cinnamon orally with snacks and meals though out the day when remembered. Last, he likes to put olive oil on whole wheat bread as a quick snack during the day

He is an active man; Long as he follows the previously mentioned exercise, food/ drink intake, and medication prescribed by his doctor he continues to have a high quality of life.

Very interesting perspective. I feel lucky that I don't have to consider changing my lifestyle in this way because I LOVE carbs and such. I think this is a great resource that provides good insight into the condition

Glassvisage - Thank you for your comments. My fiance loves to eat and still does. He is just careful not to over do it. He loves carbs too. I looked at a few of your hubs very impressive; I look foward to reading more in future.
