Why Cloth Diapers?

Cloth diapers are an alternative to disposable diapers for parents who prefer the significant monetary savings over time. Despite the obvious inconvenience and frequent laundry loads, the positive impact on the environment alone is a strong enough reason for some parents to choose cloth diapers.

However, the varieties available today can be confusing for parents who are new to cloth diapering.

Below are the five basic types:

1. Flat

Flat diapers are the traditional rectangular diapers made from cotton gauze, flannel or hemp. They are to be folded and fastened with safety pins. Waterproof covers are needed to contain urine and poop. Flat cloth diapers are economical, very absorbent and quick to dry.

2. Prefold

Prefolds are similar to flat cloth diapers except they have more absorbent layers in the middle compared to the sides. These are identified by a numbering system such as 4x8x4, which indicates the number of layers on the right, middle and left section of the fabric respectively.

Prefolds come in bleached and unbleached versions. Naturally, unbleached fabrics tend to last longer because they are not weakened by harsh chemicals. Other fabric options include hemp, organic cotton and flannel.

3. Fitted

Fitted diapers function in the same way as flats and prefolds. However, instead of having a rectangular shape, fitted diapers are sized and contoured with elasticized waist and leg openings. Snaps and velcros are used as fasteners. These diapers are not waterproof. An outer cover is still needed to prevent wetness and mess from leaking out.

4. All-in-One

All-in-one diapers are very similar in construction to disposable diapers whereby they have a one piece design. They are the simplest cloth diapers to use without any extra accessories. Snaps or velcros are used to secure the diapers in place.

All-in-one diapers come in varying sizes ranging from small to large. However, the newer breed of all-in-ones employs an ingenious system of snap closures to enable one diaper to accommodate newborns up to toddlers. These one-size diapers are the ultimate money savers! The disadvantage to all-in-one diapers is that the absorbency cannot be customized. They also have a slow drying time because the absorbent layer cannot be removed.

5. Pocket

Pocket diapers are very much alike all-in-one diapers except they have an opening in the inner lining to stuff absorbent soaker inserts. These inserts come in a variety of thicknesses, thus absorbency can be customized especially during night time. The outer shell and the inserts can be separated during washing and drying.

Conclusion

Parents who opt to use cloth diapers often find it an enjoyable and healthy experience for their babies. With the many types and brands of cloth diapers in the market today, parents are bound to find the ones that are perfect for their lifestyle and their baby.
