Types of Garden Sheds - Which are Best
69Introduction - Choosing the Right Shed for your Garden
The summer months are fast approaching us and before we know it, it will be time to get the gardening gloves, lawnmower and suncream (or is that just me?!) out. Some of us may find that our garden sheds are not quite in the same condition that we remember from the end of last summer. The tough winter months can have a bad effect on your shed and you could realise that you need a new garden shed.
There are now a wide range of garden sheds available so it can be hard to know which one is best for you. Well I'm in the fortunate position of knowing someone who knows a lot about this and told me what to look for. So after purchasing a new shed last week I thought I'd write about it.
A Metal Shed
Metal Sheds
Metal sheds will normally be made out of corrugated iron, galvanized steel or aluminum. They will be pieced together by a number of metal sheds which will be attached to a metal frame which joins them all together. Obviously a shed made from metal will be very strong and durable over time which gives it an advantage over other materials. Metal is resistant against rotting or fires as well as not becoming affected by insects. However metal can always go rusty especially if it is not galvanized, so bear this in mind when purchasing a metal shed.
A slight disadvantage of metals sheds can occur if they are made out of sheets of metal which are quite thin. If they are thin then they can be dented quite easily. This will probably be a more urgent problem if you reside in an area where vandals will target small buildings such as this. Also if it is obvious that valuable equipment is kept inside it may become a target for thieves, even more so if the metal shed is used as business storage. If you do use a metal shed in this way then you should make sure that you have the right type of insurance cover against this. When thinking of laying a foundation for the metal shed, you should make it a concrete base and secure the shed using strong bolts. You should take more care when securing a metal shed because they have the potential to do a lot of damage due to their weight and size.Related Garden Shed Links

A Wooden Shed
Wooden Sheds
What people tend to like about wooden sheds is how they have much more of a natural look about them, therefore they can easily blend into a garden without being an eye sore or standing out too much. However there are some disadvantages to having a wooden shed instead of a metal or plastic shed.
However you should take care that you look after the wood as it can sometimes become rotten or start to split, especially in bad weather conditions which can test the wood. To help prevent these problems you can buy wood varnishes and treatments which are designed to stop them from happening.Wooden sheds also tend to need more regular maintenance to avoid long term problems like those listed above. However it is worth taking a little time to carry out this work as you will see the long term benefits. Many hardware stores and shops will supply a variety of wood stains, preservatives and varnishes which can help protect against the effects of UV light, rain and snow as well as wood mites. You don't have to worry about losing the natural look of the shed either because these wood stains will come in a wide range of natural colours. It is worth knowing that there are certain types of wood which are naturally resistant to rain damage. An example of this is cedar which is ideal for this. You may find that you pay a little more for sheds that have been made out of this material but hopefully you will benefit from less rain-related maintenance problems.Take a Look at my other Hubs
