Magic

Types of Magic used by the magical community have not only positive effects, but negative as well; they are termed so because of their abilities to inherently improve or inherently weaken or destroy the target. Some spells may fit in more than one category, as most will.

Positive magic is magic that benefits a creature or object by either improving a condition or improving on an existing trait. Positive magic includes Charms, Conjuration, Protective Spells and Transfiguration.

A charm is an enchantment that causes the target to react in a way abnormal for that target. A “charm” is a rather arbitrary designation for spells that are not classified as Transfiguration spells. Examples of charms could be: a charm that causes something to flash various colors; a charm to levitate an object; a cheering charm which lightens the target’s mood. In the case of charms, the target of the charm doesn’t really change, they just unexpectedly do something. Some charms can be extremely powerful while others are feeble and weak. Memory charms can be strong enough to permanently damage the target’s mind, or so weak it modifies something they might remember in a half-hour.

Slightly different from the base category of charms, protection spells specifically protect the target from outside forces, such as Dark Magic. Protection spells can also make the target unable to be seen or detected. Protective spells cast upon others are different from curses as curses control others with the intent of causing harm or death, while protective spells are chiefly used for the opposite reason, as shield or barriers.

Conjuration is a branch of Transfiguration magic that generally creates object out of thin air. Conjuring is an advanced and complex type of magic not many magical beings can effectively use. It is included under the main category of Transfiguration, but Conjuration specifically creates objects and not alters anything in any way.

Transfiguration is the branch of magic of changing the form and appearance of the target. It also includes Conjuration and vanishing of objects, along with spells that change the inherent nature of the target.

Negative Magic is magic that causes harm, death, or destruction to the target by either draining its power, transferring power from the target to another source, or chiefly to attack the target. Although generally favored by dark beings, negative magic is not necessarily ‘evil’ and is actually often used by beings all the time, even by accident. Negative magic includes jinxes, hexes, and curses.

A Jinx is a spell used chiefly for the amusement of the caster and other observers with minor discomfort to the victim. Jinxes not only have negative effects, but are a part of defensive magic as well. Most jinx effects can be removed with a simple Counter-Jinx. They can also be prevented by an Anti-Jinx.

A Hex is more powerful than a Jinx, but still not as powerful as a curse. They generally cause a certain degree of pain along with discomfort. Some view Hexes as a minor kind of Dark Magic although they can be used for protection by distracting the target.

A Curse is a magical spell with the intention of causing harm, control, terror, or even death over the target. Curses are stronger than Jinxes and Hexes, and are plainly used in duels amongst magical beings.

Mutant powers are neutral powers that mutants possess, usually born with them from mutant parent(s). Some mutants have powerful powers while others have weaker powers.
