This type of fashion accessory has greatly evolved throughout the course of its history. In fact, today we see countless kinds of scarves in the market today. From promotional scarves to luxury scarves, from traditional to modern, from custom scarves to plain ones, you will always find shopping malls and department stores bountiful with these items.

Scarves can be categorized according to the materials used to make them, to the function they serve, and to the kind of designing method employed. When it comes to material, a scarf can be made of wool, silk, cashmere, cotton, or polyester.

  • Wool scarves are made from the fleece of sheep, which is very comfortable, warm and lightweight.
  • Silk scarves are made from woven fabrics. This type of scarf is capable of keeping the body warm.
  • Cashmere scarves, which originated from Indian craft, is derived from the wool of the inner layer of the Capra Circus, more commonly known as the Himalayan goat.
  • Cotton scarves, which are some of the most popular scarves today, are made of breathable, easy to care for and soft fabric called cotton.
  • Polyester scarves are made of artificial fiber derived from a synthetic polymer.

Now if you are going to classify scarves according to function, some of the major types include headscarf, winter scarf, beach scarf, and neck scarf.

  • Headscarves, as the name suggests, are the scarves worn on the head either as an adornment or to shield one’s hairdo.
  • Winter scarves, which are made of thick fabric great for insulation, are used during the cold winter months to protect oneself from the chill.
  • Beach scarves are mainly used during beach outings, with designs that depict beach sceneries. However, they can also be a part of one’s daily wardrobe.
  • Neck scarves are worn stylishly around the neck as an adornment or to add a personality to one’s overall look.

Finally, in terms of design, there are hand-painted scarves, beaded scarves, embroidered scarves, custom scarfs, and sequined scarves.

  • Hand-painted scarves are those with designs that are painted artworks of talented artists.
  • Beaded scarves are scarves decorated with different sizes and colors of beads, laid in different kinds of patterns.
  • Embroidered scarves feature marvelous thread work patterns.
  • Custom scarves are tailor-made to your liking and preferences.
  • Sequined scarves are similar to beaded scarves but they use star-like adornments to form myriads of patterns instead of beads.

Scarves are truly wonderful pieces of fashion accessories that would continually be an important part of most people’s daily wardrobes.
