What is RF techonology?
Now as consumers our first impulse is
to think that the more expensive the product is the better quality it
will be, however when it comes to audio this isn't necessarily true
all the time.
(tip for buying anything: one of the
secrets to marketing a product is to charge more solely because
consumers will think it a higher quality product than everything else
when this may not be true so do your homework before going for the
most expensive thing in the name of quality)
You basically have two options when it
comes to wireless headphones for TV: Infrared and RF.
The most common is RF, which means,
radio frequency. RF is the most versatile when it comes to mobility
but lags behind infrared in quality. This is because RF cant transmit
two separate frequencies to get true stereo sound. The RF transmitter
will modulate both frequencies into one to send it to your headphones
then, once its arrived it will demodulate it into the two frequencies
again.
The frequencies lose quality when going through this process. However If you have a pair of RF wireless TV headphones they will allow you to roam about the house while still keeping a clear signal. As long as there's no interference with other RF devices you'll be able to listen to the same source from several different rooms even.

Infrared Rules
Infrared on the other hand can transmit two crystal clear signals to you headphones and get some pretty awesome sound quality from them. Because infrared is a light wave though it cant travel through walls and when it comes down to it you pretty much need to have a clear line of sight to the transmitter for your headphones to work properly. The infrared technology is more limiting that RF but you get higer quality sound so its a trade off you'll need to consider.
