Attention all students aspiring to further their education in the United States, it is important to know that there are “NO”, and I stress, “NO” companies, consultants or organizations that can “Guarantee” your approval for a U.S. Student Visa.  It is a common misconception that these organizations can direct and influence the application process in your favor when in fact they can’t.  You should also be aware that each U.S. Consulate or Embassy manages the student visa application and interview process differently therefore I strongly recommend that you reach out to the office closest to your location for clarification.  This link will provide locations and contact details.  http://www.usembassy.gov/

I provide these four steps to give you a quick review of the process, access to official U. S. Department of State information, and make you aware of some of the fees you must consider prior to going forward.  I sincerely hope you find the information helpful going forward.  So let’s review:

Step 1 – You must apply and be accepted to a Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified College or University.  In short, upon acceptance the University will provide you a Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) document with information necessary for your visa application.  You “Must” obtain either the I-20 or DS-2019 document to proceed with the Visa application.  To increase your chances of acquiring one of these you should consider applying to more than one institution while keeping in mind that many US Universities require an application processing fee that can range from $25 to $250 depending on the school and area of study.  To help you with this, there are companies that can match you to reputable University that meets your financial position and walk you through the admissions process.

Step 2 – There are typically three types of visas that apply to students entering the United States.  The majority of you will require an F1 Visa to begin your studies however there are circumstances that may require you to apply for a J1 or M1 Visa.  The accepting University should guide you as to which visa is required and will be outlined on the SEVIS 1-20 or DS-2019 documents.  DO NOT APPLY for a B1 Visa.  Many students attempt this route hoping to upgrade to an F1 later.  This almost never works.  For official information regarding visas visit:

Step 3 – To apply for your Student visa you will have to fulfill the following requirements.   Complete the application for the appropriate visa (F1, J1 or M1) and pay the $131.00 application fee.  You will present the SEVIS documents provided by the College or University and pay the, up to $200.00, SEVIS fee and schedule the Visa interview through a U.S. Consulate or Embassy.

Step 4 – When preparing for the interview, you must have all your supporting documentation and provide proof of your ability to finance your education and stay in the United States.  Be sure to provide Original Documents of such things as bank books…..No Copies. You must have your letter of acceptance to the Exchange Visitor Program the receipt for your SEVIS fee detailed in form I-797 and proof of payment of your visa application fee.  You must also have the name and contact information for the College, University or sponsoring organization as well as a 24 hour emergency contact number.

Remember, the only person who can truly influence this process will be “YOU” and only through proper completion and presentation of documents will you succeed.  I provide these steps as a brief guide to help you in achieving your dream but you are ultimately responsible.  I suggest you review the official U.S. Department of State website and educate yourself.  You may also wish to participate in workshops offered by EducationUSA who operate advising centers that help with the application process.  Visit http://educationusa.state.gov/home/education-usa/global-left-nav/education-usa-advising-centers/center-directory to locate one near you or contact your local Consulate or Embassy.
