Protein Sciences Corporation, a Connecticut (US) based company that was awarded a 35-million-dollar contract to develop an influenza vaccine using insect cell technology has produced a first batch against (A) HINI flu.

Mr. Dan Adams, Chief Executive Officer of the company said "We turned out our first batch of doses--about 100,000--against (A) HINI flu last week and we are continuing to manufacture it".

The US Department of Health and Human Services  has made an announcement that it has awarded a 35-million-dollar contract to Protein Sciences, which could be extended for another five years to reach $147 million.

The insect cell technology "has advanced in recent years to a point that we believe it could help meet a surge in demand for US-based vaccine for seasonal and pandemic flu" health secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement.

A (HINI), or swine flu, which emerged in Mexico in April, has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, killing 231 people worldwide and infecting more than 52,000 people in 100 countries.

As the novel strain of swine flu spread, scientists around the world scrambled to develop a seed strain, a necessary first step in developing a vaccine using either chicken eggs or mammalian cells--the way most vaccines are produced.

They warned that the virus could mutate during the southern hemisphere's flu season before returning north in a more lethal form in autumn, in a pattern similar to that seen in the deadly 1918 flu pandemic, which claimed an estimated 20 to 50 million lives around the world.

Protein Sciences makes flu vaccine by infecting caterpillar cells with a baculovirus carrying the gene for hemagluttinin, a molecule that sticks out of the surface of the influenza virus.

"Using this method, vaccine candidates, clinical investigational lots, and commercial-scale vaccine production may be available faster than by using traditional vaccine production methods" the Health Department said in a statement.  Mr Adam said, "this method does not need a seed strain to develop a vaccine".

Hai Stella,

Most of the International Airports use "Thermal Imaging Technology" for detecting suspected swine flu affected passengers.

I, a 46 year onld otherwise healthy woman, contracted a virus this spring. All of the symptoms of H1N1. Doctor said that it must be diagnosed in 48 hours or can not call it H1N1. Every single symptom was severe from fever to aches to vomiting and GI. five full days the first time. It came back after a week this time for seven days. Doctor tested for everything. It came up as a virus. H1N1 is a very severe illness. Young children and the elderly will not make it through. Those with a chronic illness will not make it through. If it can take a 46 year old wome out two times and bluff a doctor we are dealing with a bad thing.

I for sure am NOT getting this vaccine, not only has it not been tested on humans but it contains a squalene-based adjuvant which multiple studies in animals have associated with autoimmune problems. The vaccine is also said to contain thimerosal which is ethylmercury and toxic not only to all humans but to infants and pregnant women, both which are the target groups of this vaccine. If this vaccine is mass-produced and distributed then there will be a mass pandemic of childhood neurological disorders like we have never seen before. Please do yourself and your family a favour and research the vaccine created for swine flu in 1976.....many needless bad reactions and deaths occured because people were ill informed!!!

Lena,

You are obviously one of those paranoid people who believe without any proof whatsoever (in fact multiple studies to the contrary) that vaccines cause Autism and other neurological disorders. Go put on your tinfoil hat and let the rest of humanity worry about real threats.

What is the price of this vacchine?

Those that don't believe in the adverse effects of Thimerisol have no idea what those that have children with autism understand. There is documented proof that the extraction of mercury in children afflicted with autism has improved or lessened the autistic behaviors in them. Explain that!!
