Ubuntu Linux A Popular Distribution

Ubuntu Linux is one of a recent group of Linux distributions that are rapidly gaining popularity on the desktop. Linux has always been a solid alternative for a server operating system, especially for servers that require older but still working hardware. But recently the true power of the Linux desktop has begun to transcend what has been seen before and has reached a level that can only be called "amazing."

Ubuntu started as a fork of the Debian Linux distribution, and was established in order to provide a more rapid update schedule compared to some of the larger and more familiar Linux distributions such as Red Hat or SuSE.

Dell Computer very recently began offering desktop PC systems with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed, and also began to offer a support package for the systems in a partnership with Canonical Ltd. which markets Ubuntu Linux commercially.

One of Ubuntu's best features, and one that was a natural and obvious design, is the ability to install the system from a "Live CD" environment. Most contemporary Linux installation programs provide the option to boot from the CD. Ubuntu's system simply takes this concept to the next level.

Yeah, I agree with you about the "Live CD" comment. And I would kill for a laptop with Ubuntu - or any form of Linux - preinstalled.

I have been playing with various Linux distro's for years and I agree that Ubuntu is one of the best. It has a large hardware driver library and tons of support as well as numerous wiki's and user forums that are very helpful. I am currently running Ubuntu 8.04.1 with cross-over linux installed to run a few Microsoft apps that I need.

I run ubuntu 8.04.1 aong with xp. I am quite impressed with the system. I had trouble install printers. Can the developers take note of this point and improve it so that any printer can be installed easily because a system wothout working printer is useless. Wine doors also does not install all the programs listed. many of them end up with a error report failed to install. I feel Ubuntu still needs improvement to make it a perfect system. many gaps have been closed and there many more to be done.
