The underrated bands of our time Part II The Everly Brothers
70The Everly Brothers
A little trip down memory lane .
As a child I was very fortunate that I grew up with parents that were very musical and both had outstanding taste In that regard . The old man was big on R&B as well as my Mom who was kind of a psuedo hippie , even though I was not aware of what a hippie was at that time .
But being a child In the 1960s I would learn. Pop was a very good bongo player and would often play them with my Grandpa also a very musical man who played guitar and sang just about every Sunday when the family would get together for barbeques . And they were always big parties since basically my whole family lived In Ventura county just outside LA . I also have an Aunt who was a world class flamenco dancer and was living In Spain for many years pursuing her craft and actually brought Paco DeLucia to some of the family barbeques as well as several of her dancing troupe ,and they would put together a recital that actually would have the neighbors come by. I did not realize at that time how magical those days were .
But I digress , It Is a peaceful Sunday morning and I am listening to one of my favorite radio programs "Resurrection Sunday " which features 80s music , my era . I also usually listen to a program called " Rugcutter swing " which features sounds from the Big Band Era , Glenn Miller , Tommy Dorsey , Hoagy Carmichael and to many others to remember . I usually have It playing In the background as I watch NFL football . Hey ya gotta have priorities ! Oh and by the way I can jitterbug !
My point being I have always been a lover of music . Besides my usual political hubs that I annoy you good people with ( and im always right ! ) my second passion Is music . I myself had a punk band In the late 1970s , hey we sucked but after a few kegs of beer I sounded OK and looked better . I was counting on the crowds blind drunkenness to be appreciated by them . And of course every gal loves musicians . I was not one but when you are stoned and drunk It Is easy to pass yourself off for one . But back to the subject matter at hand , I grew up surrounded by music . My Mom plopped me In front of the television In 1964 to watch a band called the Beatles , I grew up with the Motown Sound , Philly Soul , like the Delfonics .
And also many diverse forms of Rock and Roll . And when I was a rugrat Into my early grade school years you would hear alot of Chuck Berry , Marvin Gaye , Bob Dylan , and this little favorite nugget of mine The Everly Brothers which was played In our house daily .
The Everly Brothers are Don Everly and Phil Everly . Don was born In Brownie Kentucky In 1937 and the other half of this great duet Phil Everly was born In Chicago In 1939 . They had the hieght of their success between 1957 to 1964 . And even though I was a child I thoroughly enjoyed listening to their country tinged rock and roll as often as possible .
Of course they had a lull In their musical careers when both enlisted In the Marines In 1961 . But they resumed their musical careers shortly thereafter . Even though they did not reach the success they had In the late 50s . They also were a big Influence on the Beatles because of their harmonies . And also had a fan In a guy named Robert Plant who was In a band called Led Zeppelin whom I understand are pretty good .
So as always I am sitting here on Sunday feeling peaceful and enjoying the moment . And I just wanted to share with you a little taste of The Everly Brothers . In a day and age where the dance routine and shaking your booty Is considered talent , just give this little video a listen . I am kind of an old fashioned romantic and kinda yearn for music that had substance Instead of the sex sells product that they try to pass off as music these days . Once you hear this you will know why I am a fan of these guys . So enjoy your day at whatever you are doing and I present The Everly Brothers !
A nice little treat from the boys here .
