Understand The Classification of Search Engine

There are misunderstanding and misuse of the term Search Engine, there are pure search engines and search directories. The difference is they generate different search results.

Four basic types of Search Engine:

1) Crawler Based Search Engines

Web crawlers are special software that will automatically visit websites to gather information.

Web crawlers is referred as Spider or robot, it is a programs run on Search Engines. They browse web pages and follow the links to another web page. They read web pages through HTML code; as a result they cannot read Flash animation, graphic pictures and Java Script.

For Search Engine Optimization (SEO) rather then create a killer web page design, you should focus on creating a more Search Engine Friendly web pages. Of course you should also have a presentable website when you visitors visit your website, just don't over do it as you want to win in the SEO game.

Understand how the spider works will help when creating your web pages. After the spider visited your web page they will Index your page, and it will appear on Search Engine results pages for the words or phrases your web page is indexed on.

Google is a perfect example of a crawler based Search Engine.

2) Directories Search Sites

Some directories require human edit before your web page is index, so you need to submit for review by an editor.

When an editor visits your web page, they make the decision to accept or reject your page. It is very important to submit a relevant description to the editor, as it they have lots of pages to review. If you don't provide a relevant description, they will just reject it immediately.

Crawler based search engine like Google often like to use directories as a source to locate new web pages. As a result one of the strategies for SEO is to submit your web pages to some directory sites.

Yahoo Directory and Dmoz are the best known directory sites.

3) Hybrid Engines (Search Engine that uses other engines results)

Some search engine integrated directory linking to them. They obtain web pages that have been indexed by other search engine and directories.

Example: DogPile & MetaCrawler

4) Pay Per Performance and Paid Inclusion Engines

There are very few Pay Per Performance Search Engines, but just to be aware that this Search Engines will only index or rank your web page when you pay a recurring or a one time fee.
