Understanding Convergence in Photography
67You will best understand convergence by looking at photos which demonstrate it. I've put up some beauties previously so it may do for you to review some of those photos.
The ones I have chosen today and by way of illustration and most could not be described as particularly good photos but they do demonstrate the phenomenon of divergence, that is lines coming together in the distance and being drawn out towards you in front. And that feature is divergence. But it is usually from the perspective of convergence that most photographers express their work, where appropriate.
Generally it is something that you would not go out to seek to find but if in your travels you come across something where you have the opportunity to feature it you do need to know what it is and how to photograph things demonstrating this convergence.
A good illustration is often a jetty jutting out into the water, often with a walkway from which one can view the sunrise or sunset or position a person for an effective photo and you will very often see illustrations of this at exhibitions you may attend or in photography magazines and books.
Please bear in mind that the photos I am using are for the purposes of helping you to understand the concept, and you should not be critical of the photos themselves as they show the point I am trying to make.
Do get to practice as much as you can and for some good photos and some more links to tips you might like to visit the following:

Please forgive the pixelation in some of the photos, they are still worthwhile as they give you the effect and show the meaning of convergence

Convergence is a part of perspective, perspective has a far wider meaning, convergence is just the circumstance of two lines getting closer and closer to each other, usually with distance.
Thanks buddy, I'm old school, too.
I LOVE all of your photography hubs!!! I will be reading all of them :) I have a Canon Rebel XTi and I am trying to learn the ropes!
Thank you pinkdaisy, that's really good to hear.
Just keep practising, read your manual, take your camera with you and dare to experiment and just remember most professionals throw away most of their work.
Photography is a great activity, look up, down, around and never forget, behind you.

G'day katyzzz, you have some nice examples of "convergence". I must be old school, I believe we used the term "perspective" or is that a different thing again?
