What are electronics returns?

When you may a purchase at an electronics store, the second you pay for your purchase you are now under legal obligations to their return policy whether you know it or not.  These policies are often on display at registers, on receipts and in specific areas of the store.  If you head to customer service, they can even give you a copy of the return, exchange and service policies.  If you do know a particular store's return policy ahead of time and have an issue, you can rarely fight it because you are expected to know it since you made the purchase in the first place.

Tips and Tricks for Return Policies

  • Know the policy BEFORE you make the buy
  • Even if you do not know the policy, as soon as you pay for an item, you are legally liable to abide by it
  • Fighting return policies can be tricky but it can be done

Why are electronics returns policies so strict?

Electronics return policies are strict for the simple fact that most electronics cannot be resold.  If you go into a store, purchase a 50" plasma television, bring it home and open it but have buyer's remorse and return it the next day, why would anyone want to buy a used TV?  While there is a market for open box merchandise, the retailer still loses a good portion of profit because they cannot sell the TV at full price anymore.  It is in the retail company's best interest to prevent returns in any way they can and using a return policy and strictly following it is the first step to that.

Can you fight electronics returns policies?

For the most part, you cannot fight an electronics store's return policy unless the store truly is in the wrong.  You can exchange products, but you may be required to pay a restocking fee.  Again, since you made the purchase, you are under the obligation of the return policy of that store.  However, some stores are willing to bend policies to keep customers happy but only by talking to a manager or supervisor rationally can you possibly get a better turn out for your troubles.  Keep in mind that you may not always walk out the victor, but if you know the policy before hand you can avoid trouble in the first place if you need to make a return.
