Understanding Natural Framing in Photography

a soft gentle framing created by the foreground and the tree branches

So what do we mean by natural framing?

Does it mean framing with environmentally friendly products?

Does it mean taking your photos or pictures to the framers?

Perhaps it refers to those digital frames which can use to store and display several photos for you.

But, in actual fact it has nothing to do with the actual external framing of your photographs.

It refers to a technique of selecting and composing your images by enclosing them within a natural frame found as you look through the viewfinder, it can add to the effectiveness of the image and can select a certain perspective within your photo which provides the 'natural frame'

I have selected a range of photos from the web which will help you to understand this concept.

You can achieve it by photographing through windows or doors, perhaps the simplest application and depending on your lighting you may end up with a silhouette image rather than the clear image, framed, which is what you are aiming to achieve.

But that will be part of another hub.

You need to get that camera of yours out and experiment to see just what you can achieve and gradually train your eye to spot such effects.

Much of this natural framing occurs by selecting foreground and surrounds of the object of your photo and the objective you wish to portray.

For a selection of professional natural framing you should go to

Here you will find many images which have been 'framed' in this way.  There are also a number of other posts nearby which further clarify this concept for you.

I liked how you provided samples to your lesson bout naturally framing a center focal point or an area. Nicely done. Thanks for the great tip.

Good examples. You say that these examples are from the web. Are any of these photos ones you have taken?

Peggy, I choose my examples carefully, but I do not use my own work for a variety of reasons. Mainly, I keep them in reserve to "sell", blogging and hubbing just does not pay, for me, and I already give away my services for free. These things are time consuming and I am always conscious of time.
