Understanding the Effects of Alcoholism

Drinking alcohol, whether done for social purposes, to temporarily forget a personal problem, or to simply aid one's self to have a fitful sleep, can have some adverse effects on people. A person who is intoxicated primarily loses control of his mental faculty. Such vulnerability oftentimes lead to accidents, death, or even grave social and personal consequences.

Depending on the severity at which a person consumes liquors, an alcoholism intervention might be needed to address the problem. However, such notions are just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. There are more consequences traceable to the consumption of alcohol, and knowing much about these can help prevent people from drinking too much. Here's a short list of some of the known effects of alcoholism:

*Intoxication can lead to blackouts, a condition wherein a drunk person has difficulty trying to remember what he has done. Such situation can lead to accidents, risky sexual behaviors, and even deaths. Moreover, having certain memory lapses are common among intoxicated persons, same with making poor judgments and uncalled for demeanor. There are many incidents of contracting HIV or AIDS as well other sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) when people get too drunk, while pregnancies due to sexual contacts during a state of intoxication are but common occurrences.

*Aside from the familiar scenes of drunk party-goers throwing up, fainting drunkards are also a staple in places where there is a seemingly endless supply of alcohol. These drinking sprees result to a host of other problems such as sexual assaults, brawls, and murders.

*Most women who drink are reported to suffer from intense pain during menstruation. Others also complain of having abnormal menstrual cycles.

*More severe cases of alcoholism lead to comatose, liver cirrhosis, kidney and brain damages, as well as death.

For people who still have greater chances of being cured of alcoholism, undergoing an alcohol treatment program is an effective recourse. The patient can expect to receive experts' advice and treatment aside from counseling. Such program can surely spell a bright future for those whose addiction to alcohol tends to make their fates quite uncertain.
